RIP - can't add to what Jillerb said. I was a huge space nerd as a kid. Can't believe we've never come close to returning to the moon since Apollo ended. What an utterly amazing accomplishment those men and women achieved with computers that couldn't compete with what we carry in our pockets these days.
Sadly, I don't think younger generations really have a feel for what an achievement that was. And I don't think we have the political will to make such a thing happen again (not a partisan statement - I don't think we as a nation have the stomach to do something like that again).
I just listened to Ron Howard on Marc Maron's WTF podcast. He talked about the test screenings for Apollo 13, and he said he was inevitably drawn to one of the few cards that gave it a negative score. He said he read the comment on the card - "More Hollywood bullshit! There's no way those guys could survive."

It was a wonderful time to be a kid (I was 9 years old when man first walked the moon). Anything seemed possible.
