the UFC is the new WWF.

months of hype, exorbitant pricing

less than 1 minute and rousey gets the literal shit beat out of her, i don;t think she threw one punch, nunez just pummeled her. you can watch it on you tube if you hurry, i'm sure it won't be up for long.

i don't watch UFC, i find it borderline barbaric (like boxing isn't) but the build-up to this debacle was ridiculous,

I felt bad for Rousey, it was a really humiliating loss.

That said, it was a three hour card with good fights and another title shot that went the distance. This isn't that different from when Tyson was getting all those fast KOs -- it happens.

Man did Nunez knock her into silly land. Maybe Rousy can join the cast of the Furious clan.

I'm with ya Renny.

I find the sport barbaric and ugly and I don't watch any of it.

Yes, I like football, hockey and every now and then boxing, but I hate hockey fights, dirty hits in football, and I don't enjoy seeing someone get bludgeoned, especially women.

Just not my thing.

I don't even know who these people are.

Was this on free TV or PPV?

I honestly don't know who she is.

She may need 16 minutes.

The biggest thing for me with the UFC - and I was a fan for a long time - is that it needs to be a calling (in the truest sense) for a fighter to be successful. It must be your life. Eat to train, sleep to recover, train to fight, fight, recover, start over. That's it. Once a person gets successful and starts to get pressure from outside demands, then the decline starts, and it's a steep downhill. This is not a hobby, and it's not something rich people do for kicks. You have to be want it; not in the usual sports sense, but in the kill your parents / sell your soul to get it sense.

Rhonda, became a celebrity. and MMA became a hobby. and she's gotten creamed ever since.

I'm not going to get into the barbaric debate - I think it's healthier than boxing, and way less corrupt (which also improves safety) - but I get why people think it's a cockfight. and in a mismatch, it can be.

Less people have died in MMA than in both boxing and football.

There's been 9 deaths I've read about. 4 in sanctioned bouts the other 5 in unsanctioned ones. The death total isn't even in double digits, yet.

Please excuse my chauvinism and I'll preface this by stating that I find all fighting "sports" to be disgusting, but what does it say about us as a society that we enjoy and pay to watch women beat the crap out of each other?

The economist in me says that it's free market economics- logical and fact based. Emotionally though, I'm completely repulsed by it.

This is how I feel, and comparing deaths in sport is not what I was intending.

I didn't see anyone talking about deaths.

It's also impossible to do, seeing as this is a relatively "new" sport and football and boxing have been around for hundreds of years.

Also, does it need to be in a cage?

It started in The States in 1993, with UFC 1. It's been popular in Brazil for decades. Over there it is/was called Luta Livre which is Portuguese for "anything goes." The Gracie family competed in that style since the 40s and wanted a way to showcase their brand of Jiu-jitsu so they teamed up with an American business man and made UFC 1 as a way to showcase the family art form. Helio, the families patriarch, wanted to prove "Gracie Jiu Jitsu" was the most effective avenue of self defense and could best anyone, regardless of any size and strength disadvantages, while prevailing against any style of martial art.
