I'm in for this.

David Lynch dropped the ball on this franchise decades ago, although it was Dino De Laurentiis who insisted on Lynch as director (based on what I've read).

I've always liked Sean Young's little 'making of' movie about Dune.

I loved the visuals of Lynch's Dune, but the movie was a mess.

Once you see "Jodorowsky's Dune", David Lynch's attempt becomes more amazing that it even made it to screen at all.

Lynch's Dune is still the only movie I've ever seen where they handed out a sheet of crib notes with your ticket purchase.

I don't get that. I saw the movie when I was 12 (still way too young, probably), and I didn't have any trouble following it at all. Emperor wants to destroy a political enemy because of a prophecy. What's so hard to understand?

I can't judge because I'd already read the first four books when I saw the movie.

I remember one thing -- being confused that the "Weirding Way" was a vocal sonic blast, because I hadn't read it that way in the books. I later learned that was a cinematic touch to translate it to screen. No internets in those days to get questions answered.

I think the movie should not have been given to someone like Lynch, who enjoys obscure confusing things like dancing midgets. It is a movie that would benefit from a skilled expositionist, someone who can impart the "rules" of the universe he's created to the audience with subtletly. I would be willing to bet that most people who saw Dune don't realize that civilization had banned computers, and that the purple-lipped Mentats took their place to perform the advanced calculations needed.

I read the first book well after I saw the movie. It gave me a bit of background motivation for some characters, and I kind of think Lynch and co. did the right thing with the Weirding Way and the changes to the ending.

Think of the speech Obi-Wan made about what the Force is -- it helps. People understand with a little bit of that, they go "Okay, there's a Force in this thing."

There's an alternate reality where Star Wars flopped, but Dune was a hit, and we have a new Dune movie every year.

Interesting article on how to successfully adapt it to the screen.

What about Chani? Is it like Dick Cheney, or like the Rani?

I'd listen to the whole series on audio book if I had it. My eyes suck pretty hard.

Alas, I put down the iPod months and months ago and haven't gotten back to it yet.

There's one scene from Dune that's my favourite out of all of Lynch's movies - the one where two scientific midgets are performing some esoteric procedure on a cow and Rabban kicks one of them over, at which point the Baron yells "That's the spirit!" (or something), after he's just given Rabban the pep talk about being merciless, etc. It's the best thing in the whole movie. :)

Interesting side fact: I'm a fan of the old Avalon Hill boardgame Dune.
