That was the first thing that popped into my mind too. Although Kong's not exactly what you'd call a "hero" in the usual sense.

How about Carl Denham? He CAPTURED Kong singlehanded, with nothing more than some knockout gas. That's got to count for something!

Then again, that capture turned out to be such a bad idea that it's kind of hard to consider Denham a hero too....

I have a Jungle Jim movie and also a Jungle Jim comic book by Ditko.
Both are pretty good.

He doesn't seem heroic at all to me... I haven't seen him in a story like the Hulk or Godzilla, where the monster ends up being a hero.

Then again, I've only see a couple Kong movies.

I guess fighting one or more dinosaurs to save a half-dressed lady is not good enough for Hanzo. So be it. If this next movie is not good, it's on your head.

Honestly all the rest are pretty much clones of Tarzan. While in jungle settings, I don't think of Mowgli, the Phantom, or Black Panther as jungle heroes in the same vein as Tarzan.

So basically you need to be a Tarzan clone to be a jungle hero?

Mowgli is more of a victim of circumstance than a hero, IMO.
Black Panther seems like he has most of his adventures in New York, and is a traditional superhero to me.
The Phantom, I apparently had no idea about. Reading up on him more, he definitely fits.

You leave off the only character with his own theme song?

Yeah, but he's still a jungle hero at heart -- like if Tarzan joined the Avengers or something.

ERB has been accused of ripping off Mowgli. Besides just the named animals and the "raised by animals" thing, he uses his ability to summon the animals to do heroic swooping. ERB even screwed up and put tigers in Africa (I suppose another point in favor of the Mowgli ripoff theory).

The Phantom got my vote - the skull cave, the pygmy tribe who saved him, the ring with the little skull that leaves a bruise when he hits people....he's got some good stuff going for him.

He's got one of my favorite superhero concepts ever -- the generations of Walkers assuming the mantle, creating the impression that the Phantom is immortal to the outside world.

I loved the Bruce Jones/Brent Anderson run on Ka-Zar. I even named an orange cat we had Zabu.

Yeah, he's got the classic superhero feel, and also the jungle action thing happening. The fake immortality stuff is a brilliant idea, as well.
