'Lucifer' Gets Back-Nine Order for Full Season 2 at Fox

Fox is going the distance with the devil.

The network has handed out a back-nine order to sophomore drama Lucifer, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The order brings its season two tally to a full 22 episodes.

From prolific producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Lucifer is based on characters created by Neil Gaiman and hails from his DC Entertainment-based Vertigo comic series. The Tom Ellis and Lauren German starrer is produced by Tom Kapinos, Bruckheimer, Jonathan Littman, Ildy Modrovich, Joe Henderson, KristieAnne Reed and Len Wiseman and in its second season on Mondays following Gotham has proven to be a reliable performer (and creating a DC Comics-themed Monday block). Factoring in multiple platform and DVR plays, season two is averaging 8 million total viewers — up 105 percent compared with its same-day haul.

“Lucifer continues to deliver, with great blasts of dark humor and ambitious storytelling. The show has turned out to be a true wicked pleasure, the perfect companion to Gotham, and we couldn’t be more pleased to order these nine additional episodes,” Fox Broadcasting president David Madden said Monday in a statement. “We’d like to thank Tom, Lauren and the entire cast, who have imbued these characters with charm, humor and a great deal of humanity. Our thanks also go out to the production crew — Jerry, Len, Jonathan, Joe and Ildy — who, week-in and week-out, deliver a stellar show. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for the rest of the season.”

The Warner Bros. Television drama's full-season pickup comes as Fox is prepping its midseason schedule, announcing the January return for Bones and series debut of comedy The Mick. The network also recently slashed the order for midseason comedy Making History from 13 to nine as execs evaluate scheduling needs.

Among the freshman class of 2016-17, Fox has handed out a full-season order to Lethal Weapon (with a pickup of five episodes for a total of 18). The futures of The Exorcist and Pitch have not yet been determined.

Midseason fare awaiting premiere dates are Prison Break, Shots Fired, Star, APB and Making History as well as Sleep Hollow season four. Meanwhile, 24: Legacy will bow after the Super Bowl.

Lucifer joins NBC comedy Superstore as sophomore dramas scoring full-season pickups.

Lucifer remains a key off-network show for producers Warner Bros. Television. Fox has only three off-network shows this season, and they're all from WBTV: Lucifer, Gotham and Lethal Weapon.

Good news about Lucifer. We love this show. The scene where Lucifer and the new girl this year described the murders in the yoga class was hysterical. We had to rewind it because we kept laughing over the lines. Tom Ellis is outstanding on the show.

I got a kick out of his "douche lessons."

It's a good show - even interesting - theologically speaking.

I've been enjoying the second season a lot. I could listen to Tom Ellis read the phone book. Everything he says is funny, the way he says it.

I was surprised and pleased that he revealed himself to his therapist. It was a good move. I loved the quiver in her lip. And Maze revealed herself to Trixie with the opposite reaction. I really like Maze.

At first I thought his therapist was going to go catatonic and just stay that way for the rest of the season.

'Tis the season. They did this last year too. A lot of the shows take off for the holidays.

It's funny how the cop procedural aspect of this show is just a flimsy framework for the relationship drama to hang on. I'm really glad they let the therapist in on it.

Looks like Lucifer gets saved by Netflix.

:yay:

So did y'all get episodes out of order down there, too? We got the season finale one week, and then the week after got two more back to back / joke type episodes, including one where Neil Gaiman was the voice of Dad.

We did. They had filmed those two before news of cancelation. They decided to air them anyway, for the fans, I suppose.

The first one wasn’t so great, but I enjoyed the alternate reality one. I’m glad Netflix saved them. It was just getting good with the season finale!

Season finale was fantastic and made up for a lot of mediocre episodes this year. Those last two one-shot episodes were fillers that were going to be used in season 4 but when they cancelled Fox decided to just go ahead and air them (because fans were demanding it, and the episodes were airing in other countries anyway). Glad to see it come back on Netflix for at least one more season!
