It had been recently reported that the popular film franchise is about to undergo a major revival with NBCUniversal, the media and entertainment company which acquired DreamWorks Animation in April, planning to make as many as four animated movies a year including new Shrek sequels.
NBCUniversal's CEO Steve Burke told investors last month (June 15) that Despicable Me and Minions producer Chris Meledandri will be taking control of its new, expanded slate of animated movies.
"He is creatively going to try to help us figure out how to resurrect Shrek and take a lot of the existing DreamWorks franchises and add value as we create new franchises," Burke said. The overall goal, he explained, will be to maximise revenues by creating popular characters which can be licensed out for lucrative spin-off merchandise and theme park attractions.
The Hollywood Reporter now reports that Shrek 5 (official title not yet known) has been given a due date of 2019. More details as we have them.
DreamWorks Animation's first Shrek movie, featuring Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy in voice roles, came out in 2001 with sequels following in 2004, 2007 and 2010.
A spin-off film centered on Antonio Banderas's feline character, Puss In Boots, then followed in 2011. A sequel, Puss In Boots 2: Nine Lives & 40 Thieves, has been in the works since 2012 but currently has no confirmed release date.

Ah, the lofty goals of the creative artist...no Icarus, do not fly too near the sun, for fear thy waxen wings will melt....
Austin Powers writer Michael McCullers is reportedly working on Shrek 5 after the sequel has been given the green light.
Michael McCullers worked on all three of the Austin Powers movies – Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and Austin Powers in Goldmember.
According to The Hollywood News, DreamWorks Animation are currently working on Shrek 5. Directors Mike Mitchell and Walt Dohrn – who worked on the recently released Trolls – spoke of McCullers involvement.
Mitchell told The Hollywood News, “They’ve got a pretty good story [for Shrek 5]. It’s being written by Michael McCullers who wrote all of the Austin Powers films. He came up with a really great idea that they’re exploring.”
“There’s more story to tell there and we’re ready to help tell it for sure,” Dohrn added. When asked if the pair will be directing the new film, Dohrn said, “Not yet. But we wanna be [involved], we’d love that.”
Excerpted from a Hollywood Reporter interview with screenwriter Michael McCullers:
Quote:
Shrek 5 is being developed. I finished that script which I really, really, really love. It’s really personal to me. It’s got a pretty big reinvention behind it that I guess I can’t really reveal, but since DreamWorks was sold to Universal in that time for over $3 billion, I imagine they’re particularly interested in it stepping up and actually figuring out the future of the franchise in that way on the corporate level. Reinvention was sort of called for. There’s been four movies and a lot of material, so the characters are pretty beloved and they’re great characters, but you also have to think of apretty new take at that point.
