Deluxe two disc (CD + NTSC/Region 0 DVD-A) edition. Beat is the 11th release in the acclaimed King Crimson 40th anniversary series. The classic album has been mixed for 5.1 Surround Sound from the original studio masters by Steven Wilson and is fully approved by Crimson founder Robert Fripp. The CD features a completely new stereo album mix by Robert Fripp and Steven Wilson plus a studio version of the otherwise unreleased track "Absent Lovers". The DVD-A features a 5.1 DTS Mix and High Resolution Stereo mixes. Also included on the DVD-A: a 5.1 Lossless audio mix and Lossless Stereo mixes; both the original album mix and the new album mix in High Resolution stereo; the complete album in rough mix form dating from the time of the original sessions; performances featured on German TV live from The Alabamahalle & the original, rarely seen, promo film for 'Heartbeat'. Beat was released in June 1982 just eight months after the '80s Crimson lineup debut album Discipline. It marked the first occasion where a King Crimson line-up had remained intact for a two album stretch and was also the first album by the band to employ a separate producer - Rhett Davies. The juxtaposition of lyrics heavily influenced by '50s beat luminaries Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady.

Also included on the DVD-A: a 5.1 Lossless audio mix and Lossless Stereo mixes; both the original album mix and the new album mix in High Resolution stereo; additional tracks from 30th Anniversary edition plus promo video for 'Sleepless'. Having released two albums in a nine month period between October 1981 and July 1982, Three of a Perfect Pair is the final part of the recorded trilogy begun with Discipline and Beat. Originally released in April 1984, from the pointillist minimalism of the title track through to the urgent rush of 'Sleepless' and the album's closer 'Larks' Tongues in Aspic III' - the only reference to the 1970s incarnations of the band - Crimson's distinctive mixture of rock, electronica, funk and pure pop songs, ensured the group's status as one of the most interesting and innovative bands of the decade.

Along with Marillion, the Grateful Dead, The Allmans & The Who, I think KC may have released the most vault & concert limited editions of any rock artist.

I've never heard a bad one, but how many do I have time to listen to??!

I may have to get one of these. I'm still a newbie when it comes to Crimson, but Bruford, Adrian Belew and Tony Levin are a part of this lineup and that, combined with Wilson remixes might be an offer I can't refuse.

Fripp's diaries from this band's formation and early gigs were serialized in Musician magazine (remember that great mag?!) I was absolutely floored when the first album came out! Did eventually see them in 1984 at the Mann Music Center near Philly.

I agree with you. To my taste, Red is their best album, and one of my favorite albums ever. Fripp, Wetton, and Bruford. Awesome! Those guys crushed it on this album.
