Not sure why we've never had a general Planet of the Apes thread...

I've been watching the original Twilight Zone series from start to finish and have come to the same conclusion as the writer of this blog. Serling used a good number of plot points from his Twilight Zone scripts when putting together his script for Planet of the Apes.

The "it was Earth all along" meme is used a few times on the Twilight Zone. But the similarities between the series and movie really hit home when I watched The Rip Van Winkle Caper this week. Four people go into suspended animation, only three wake up (finding the time ravaged corpse of their compatriot in his damaged sleep chamber).

Everything in Planet of the Apes (1968) Came from These 6 Twilight Zone Episodes

I can think of even more examples, where the relationship is more tangential. Burgess Meredith in a destroyed earth. The one where the space pilot has an extended hallucination of an empty earth (he was just sitting in a box the whole time).

Buck Kartalian, the Keeper of the Cages in Original 'Planet of the Apes,' Dies at 93

Buck Kartalian, the burly character actor who played the cigar-smoking gorilla Julius, the Keeper of the Cages, in the original Planet of the Apes, died Tuesday. He was 93.

Kartalian died of natural causes at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, Calif., his son, Jason Kartalian, said.

Kartalian also was known for his role as Dynamite, the "champion eater" and one of Paul Newman's fellow inmates, in Cool Hand Luke (1967), and he played a shopkeeper in Clint Eastwood's The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976). His career lasted more than six decades.

In Planet of the Apes (1968), Kartalian is in charge of security at the Research Complex for studying humans. He enjoys tormenting George Taylor (Charlton Heston) with a water hose before the captured astronaut escapes his jail cell. His character's cigar was his idea, and he has a memorable line in the movie: "You know what they say: 'Human see, human do.'"

Kartalian later played another gorilla named Frank in the 1972 sequel Conquest of the Planet of the Apes.

The 5-foot-3 Kartalian, a professional wrestler and body builder who was born in Detroit, portrayed Sampson in a 1951 production of Romeo and Juliet on Broadway (Olivia de Havilland starred as Juliet). He toured in a national production of Mister Roberts and then had a small role as a sailor in the 1955 Henry Fonda film version.

He came to Los Angeles in the 1960s.

Kartalian also appeared in such films as Sail a Crooked Ship (1961), Myra Breckinridge (1970), The Man With Bogart's Face (1980), The Rock (1996), My Favorite Martian (1999) and Tomcats (2001).

His TV résumé included the series Naked City, The Untouchables, Get Smart, McHale's Navy, Batman (as one of Catwoman's henchmen in the 1966 "Hot Off the Griddle" episode), Curb Your Enthusiasm, Just Shoot Me! and How I Met Your Mother.

He had a role in the 1959 Broadway play Golden Fleecing, directed by Abe Burrows.

Kartalian also is survived by children Julie and Aram.

What? Planet of the Apes doesn't come from a book? Then what do I recall reading...some adaption after the fact?

Pretty sure that Rod Sterling wrote the screenplay based upon the book, which I too read.

Well, Wiki sez:

"La Planète des Singes, known in English as Planet of the Apes and Monkey Planet, is a 1963 science fiction novel by French author Pierre Boulle. It was adapted into the 1968 film Planet of the Apes, launching the Planet of the Apes media franchise."

The Planet of the Apes box set has a documentary that explains the differences between the book and movie.
Serling's first draft had motorized and flying vehicles in it.
It was deemed to expensive to make.

Planet of the Apes/Green Lantern Crossover Covers Show Cornelius in Action

Click for full size

We got super psyched when we heard that the Green Lantern Corps was heading to the Planet of the Apes for its latest crossover comic series. Now, we’re getting a look at the star of the show: Cornelius, the coolest ape around.

A couple new covers for the upcoming series from BOOM! Studios have been released, including a CBR-revealed variant for the first issue that shows Cornelius side-by-side with the other heroes of Green Lantern Corps. We speculated that Cornelius was going to be the hero of the story, and these images definitely confirm it.
