Description
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members Heart return on July 8 with Beautiful Broken, their sixteenth album and their first on Concord Records. Heart has sold over 35 million records, and this anticipated album is their first in four years. Beautiful Broken finds Ann and Nancy Wilson exploring new songs, as well as taking some of their favorite cherry picks from their catalog and rerecording and re-imagining them. The album spans a wide range of musical flavors, though all wrapped up in the Wilson sisters' unique brand of hard hitting rock, and even draws a few friends of the band into the mix. The title track features a dynamic guest vocal contribution by Metallica's James Hetfield with Ann Wilson, while another of the brand new songs, Two, was penned by hip-hop artist, Ne-Yo.

Tracklist
1. Beautiful Broken
2. Two
3. Sweet Darlin'
4. I Jump
5. Johnny Moon
6. Heaven
7. City's Burning
8. Down on Me
9. One Word
10. Language of Love

It was announced that Heart's new CD will be released on the Concord label on June 17th.

It appears to be a strange combination of re-recordings of some of their earlier songs plus some new songs.

Some of the re-recorded tracks: “Beautiful Broken”, “City’s Burning”, “Sweet Darlin'", “One Word”, “Johnny Moon”, “Language of Love”, and “Heaven”.
Some of the new tracks: “Two”, and “I Jump”.

Impossible.

I will get this new one though.

so, when your muse has left you, you redo your older stuff and throw in a few new ones and release an album....interesting.

Major disappointment. I have every Heart album but will probably be skipping this. Not interested in a bunch of old recycled songs. Why not just release an EP or wait another year when there are enough quality newly written songs to record?

I don't understand it either. All of those remakes are really deep cuts too, so they aren't obvious choices. For example, "City's Burning" came from "Private Audition", which didn't exactly go over really big when it was new, so I don't see why they would be interested in re-recording it now.

They could re-record these songs and give them a much different sound. Passionworks had such an early 80s sound that re-recordings of those tracks will likely be much different. They could take Sweet Darling and transform that one into a real rocker. But why bother? Passionworks has the sound it has but it was a quality record and I don't think a 2016 update makes those songs any better. Sweet Darling was done right the first time, so why mess with it? I just can't see myself wanting to listen to any of these songs and decided to pull the 2016 version off the shelf rather than the original.

Having said that, no doubt that as a Heart fan I will for some stupid reason buy this just to complete the collection and waste more money. At least I'll have the pleasure of coming on this board and whining and complaining about it (as I will admit I do enjoy a good "piss and moan" session).

I just don't see why, if the Wilson sisters have determined their songwriting ability has dried up, they don't hire a real songwriter and co-write with them and still pocket 50% of the publishing royalties and actually give the fans a quality collection of new songs. Doing stuff like releasing a bunch of re-recordings makes Heart seem "old" and "retro" and (I hate to say it) "washed-up."

I think they did that for their self-titled 1985 album and "Bad Animals". There is only one song to be found there (on Bad Animals) that was actually written by the Wilson sisters. Those were very successful, but I have to wonder if they would have the same kind of luck if they tried it again.

Well OK, but if this CD gets as poor a reception as it seems to be getting on here, then $$$$$$ isn't much of an issue.

I really think $$$ is a much more realistic estimate.

This won't make any money.

Guess what else wouldn't?

A new studio album.

I see that Ann Wilson is touring with the "Ann Wilson Thing". I wonder if that's where the creative energies are going.

I also see that The Ann Wilson Thing has a live, download-only album out now.

I certainly hope the new Heart album is not download only. Right now it wouldn't take much to convince me not to buy this, and being download-only would be just the thing to do it.

If the reception for this is as poor as we suspect on here, I should be able to pick up a cheap used copy shortly after release!

According to the Heart website, the release of this has been pushed back to at least July 8th.

Further details from an interview on their site:

Nancy has revealed that “Sand” and “Down On Me” will be on the new album. The number of tracks from albums from 1980 to 1984 is remarkable, as is the absence of tracks from the Capitol years.

Can you talk about the new album?
It’s called “Beautiful Broken.” There are some new songs, and we also got the chance to redo some of my favorite old ones that were kind of lost in translation in the ’80s. It was like, “Ah, I wish I’d had a chance to record that well,” you know? So there’s a whole bunch of songs that are meaningful to me, like “Heaven” and “Sand,” and also things like Johnny Moon, Sweet Darling, Down on Me, and Language of Love. They’re just really beautiful and, I think, poetic songs that are really fun to play.

When you say that some of these songs were “lost in translation,” what are you referring to? The production?
Just the sound of the music, the performances…honestly, there was kind of a lot of drug use going on in those days. One of the producers was pretty much hitting bottom on cocaine when we did a few of these songs. And it sounded like that. You could hear it in the vocals, too—it’s not a relaxed interpretation or a conversation. It’s more like, “I’m proving it to you…now!” That kind of approach. A little pushy sounding. So, really, one of my favorite things about what we just finished doing in the studio was that we gave a couple of these songs another chance, another life. We had to love them back into existence.

They're entitled to make this album and I'm entitled to pass on it.
