Reading the BVS thread, Nightowl posted this and I think we've all been there with one movie or another --

Night Owl wrote:
I didn't think it was great, but it was no where as near as bad as Rotten Tomatoes or Imwan says. I would give it a "B/B-" grade. DC has so many incarnations of its characters that I just went in seeing it as another "Elseworlds" story. I just went into the movie accepting the universe for what it is. There were no glaring continuity/timeline errors like Dark Knight Rises to take me out of the fantasy so it all worked for what it was.

Everyone here has that movie that it seems everyone at IMWAN or the critics think is weak to outright bad -- for me, there's John Carter, the Thor movies and Man of Steel. On the flip side, there are movies that are huge hits and critically beloved that we end up scratching our heads at -- for me, it's Guardians of the Galaxy and those Fast & Furious movies.

What about you? What are the 'bad' movies you enjoyed and the 'good' movies you were underwhelmed by?

I enjoyed but IMWAN hates -- Watchmen, Rocky IV, Godzilla 2014

IMWAN loves but not so much for me -- Mad Max: Fury Road, the first Captain America, Guardians of the Galaxy

I have a friend who will watch and enjoy anything. He just takes whatever and sits back and enjoys it. He has seen every low budget horror movie ever and loves them like they were produced and directed by Martin Scorsese. He's actually quite intelligent. He has an MBA. He just has no literary critical sense whatsoever. He just loves all movies. He'll watch anything.

I try to take the Ebert approach and judge a movie depending on what it's trying to be (a great comedy might not be a great FILM but it's working at what it's trying to do). Some movies, for whatever reason, just work for me.

Man of Steel - I honestly love it and think it's one of the best superhero films, easily in the top 5. This is an opinion not shared by many.

The Donner Superman movies - Outside of Christopher Reeve, John Williams, and maybe Terrence Stamp, I just don't get it. I wouldn't say either of them are bad, and Reeve elevates the movies in the same way that Ledger does The Dark Knight or Clint Eastwood did in most of his westerns. Outside of that, I think the tone is all over the place, the plots are a mess, and the seem (to me) like movies that are only enjoyable as nostalgia. Again, this is not an opinion shared by many.

Some movies (that at first seem bad or leave you scratching your head) need to be seen more than once, maybe even multiple times to get.
For me two that fit that bill are The Matrix and Harold And Maude. I didn't get what all the fuss was about Matrix til I saw it the second time (never did see it at the movies) and the first time I saw Harold And Maude on VHS, didn't get that cult hit from the 70s.
Then we gave it another try a few weeks later and viola, now I see why it was a cult hit.

In that vein, I didn't really like Terry Gilliam's Brazil, until I saw the proper director's cut. Now I think it's a masterpiece.

God, it must be awesome to be him. Anything, any genre? Even chick flicks?

Sure. He doesn't care. Years ago we watched Terms of Endearment together.

Wow, he's so lucky. It's like a new Star Wars movie (or whatever) comes out every week for him.

I have that same life, but it's because of my appreciation for much older movies. Once you push pass envelope of noise that your own era/genre folds about you, there's a whole avalanche of all time greats to watch.

That could make an interesting thread: Chick Flicks Even Guys Can Like. I think I'll do it!

I've since made an 180 with Thor, and I seem to recall pretty much every one here liked John Carter, except Steven (not enough robot testicles, I suppose).

I'll add another vote to Cloud Atlas, that movie is brilliant.

A recent one that got tons of critical acclaim was the animated Anomalisa. For most reviewers it was a brilliant examination of the human condition, for me it was about a creepy motherf•••• who takes advantage of a young girl.

Many fans were disappointed by the second Avengers movie, but I find new things to like every time I watch it. Iron Man 3 is hated by many, but for me it's pretty awesome.

Most of the acclaim Gonzalez Iñárritu's movies receive is a mystery to me, except for el Chivo's photography.

Test it with God's Not Dead.

I thought everyone loved Iron Man 3, and it was IM2 that got all the hate.

That Mandarin thing produced more sand than a regular Sahara storm.

Ah, yeah, I forgot about that. I didn't care for the development at all and apparently purged that part from my mind.

I tend to enjoy those 90s to 00s cop flicks that were usually low budget but full of good lines and action like the Steven Segal movies (Marked For Death (1990) and Exit Wounds (2001) are classics!) and that one Brian Bosworth flick called Stone Cold (1991) which is dynamite!

That's one of the reasons I liked it.
