U2 have finished '70 per cent' of their next album

U2's bassist Adam Clayton has said that the band have finished '70 per cent' of their next album.

Speaking to Q, Clayton said that they have already got over half of the material together for the follow-up to the recently released 'Songs of Innocence'. Their next album will be their 14th and is set to be titled 'Songs of Experience'.

He commented: "I think we've probably got 70 per cent of the material that we think will go onto it. The 30 per cent that we're missing I think we'll be able to generate relatively easily. But the amount of energy it will take to refine the perspective of those songs is hard to predict."

Speaking about how the album will be delivered, after 'Songs Of Innocence' was controversially 'gifted' into the accounts of 500 million iTunes users, Clayton said: "Y'know what, depending on how long it takes to be completed, there may be a whole new delivery method invented by then... I think we just have to wait and see. There'll be a bit of water under the bridge before we get to that point. But yeah, I think it would be a bit predictable to do the same thing. And y'know, the law may have changed by then and we'll have to find some other way of doing it."

Bono reveals U2's 'Songs Of Experience' will be released next year

U2 frontman Bono has announced that the band's new album, 'Songs Of Experience', will be released in 2016.

It follows 2014's 'Songs of Innocence', which was 'gifted' to iTunes' worldwide customer base and automatically downloaded onto users' devices, a stunt which received widespread criticism. A week later Apple released a tool to allow iTunes users to remove the album from their devices.

Bono later apologised, admitting to a "drop of megalomania, touch of generosity, dash of self-promotion". However, he later backtracked on his apology, telling Billboard that the album giveaway was "one of the proudest things for us ever."

Today (September 18), Bono told The Irish Times, “We’re going to get [Songs Of Experience] out next year. Unusually for us, a lot of the songs are done already.”

The Irish band are currently in the middle of their world tour, entitled 'Innocence + Experience', and will play London, Manchester, Belfast and Dublin in October and November.

U2 'would not rule out' releasing next album for free on iTunes again

U2 have stated that they are open to releasing their next album in a similar way to the free iTunes release of its predecessor.

The Irish band made headlines when they released 'Songs Of Innocence' in September 2014, making the album free to anyone with an iTunes account. The move proved a controversial one, with Apple forced to create a tool that allowed users to remove the album from their library.

Bono and co are planning on releasing its follow-up, 'Songs Of Experience', in 2016, with guitarist The Edge stating that the band are exploring "all options" for its release.

The Edge recently told The Belfast Telegraph: "We haven't figured it out yet, but our intention would be to get it out sometime in the back end of next year".

He added: "I would not rule out doing something similar [to the 'Songs Of Innocence' release] with the next record".

So will the single song "Invisable" that was released during the Super Bowl half time show a couple of years ago be on this CD? In all fairness it should've on "Songs of Innocence" but I digress. I only ask because its a too good of a song to be left by its own just dangling by itself IMHO.

"Invisible" is a hidden track on Disc 2 of the Songs Of Innocence Deluxe Edition.

Thank you very much for the 411 Tricky Kid, I had no idea. Typical U2 they would put it on the deluxe 2CD set in order to force those who're "on the fence" as to which version to buy. Nice marketing strategy Bono, lol. Thanks again!

"Ordinary Love" is just hanging out there as well. No album. And that's a better track than "Invisible" in my opinion.

Thanks for that tip as well ARK. I'll listen to that later today. Typical U2, their best tracks are orphaned and left all alone!

It's on the "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" soundtrack.

The Edge compares next U2 album 'Songs of Experience' to Zooropa

The Edge has revealed that progress is being made on the next U2 album, and that it sounds like the band's 1993 album 'Zooropa'.

'Songs of Experience' is expected sometime in 2016, and is a companion record to 2014's 'Songs of Innocence', with the two titles combining to form the name of the Dublin act's recent world tour.

In an interview with Q Magazine, The Edge reveals some details of the record, including that parts of it have been completed on down time in between tour dates. Bono also recently revealed that he wrote a song about the Paris attacks during the band's recent tour.

In the interview, guitarist The Edge first compared the record to Zooropa, and then said producer Brian Eno would like a similar path to the eighth album to be followed in the future. He said:

"[Eno] would love to see us making albums a bit more like that. Where we go, ‘You know what? We’re not going to second-guess any of this. Let’s just go for it.’ I think there’s a quality you get when there’s a certain momentum to the process.”

Bono, meanwhile, revealed in the same interview that the bike accident he suffered in New York around the turn of 2014/2015 has actually helped him with the record.

The frontman said “The gift of it was that I had time to write while in the mentality that you get to at the end of an album. There is a reason why all the great groups made their best albums while in and around touring, because the ideas have to come out of your head.”

U2 finished their Innocence and Experience Tour with shows in Paris before Christmas, with Bono rounding off his year by busking on Dublin's Grafton Street with a host of other big-name local acts.

I've got "Invisible" as track 2 and "Ordinary Love" as track 8 in my tracklist for Innocence and they fit perfectly for me.

Not that I don't appreciate new music or anything, but aren't we due for a remaster/expansion of Rattle And Hum?

Only when they get rights to the movie from Columbia.

Aaah...well fortunately, a bunch of the shows are out there in there entirety, so at least there's that. I have shows from Boston, NYC, Denver, and Syracuse...and of course the Paris show from the JT box.

He would probably do it, but it takes so long to address all those CD envelopes and get the discs in the mail.

And it's not as though Edge, Larry or Adam will give Bono any help in that arena.

Edge: U2 Have '50 Ideas' for Next Album

A year and a half after U2 surprised listeners with the release of their 13th LP, Songs of Innocence, the band is working on its follow-up album. "It's really hard to say at this point when it will be done," the Edge tells Rolling Stone. "We're definitely still in the weeds here. We're not booking the pressing plant, so to speak, just yet."

The musician, who was "laying down a couple of guitar tracks" in a Los Angeles studio using his new custom guitar and amplifier, said that the group is staying its course with what Edge has said would be titled Songs of Experience. "We always envisaged that it would be a two-record set," he says. "It's a companion album to Songs of Innocence."

U2 have a lot to consider. Edge recently conducted a count of the song ideas the band has on the table. "Including a lot of my really rough demos – I'm not suggesting they're finished, by any means – there's actually 50 pieces of music that I've put time into," he says with a hearty laugh. "Some of them have not been arranged or performed by the band, but there's 50 ideas, and probably about 20 that we're actually really excited about. So we've got some ways to narrow it down, but we're in good shape."

The band is serving as their own harshest critics, reviewing each possibility. It's a process that the guitarist says is working well so far. "We are trying to really be brutal with the material and only focus on the things that we're really convinced are the best ideas," Edge says. "I would say we're now at the point of starting to really edit down to the core collection of songs that will make the record. Things are still in their rough state, but sounding really great."

One example of the guitarist's many song ideas can be heard toward the end of a video he made for Fender, announcing his first-ever custom guitar, the Edge Signature Stratocaster. At the 4:26 mark of the clip, he plays what he describes as a "killer groove" on the instrument along with a bouncy, syncopated rhythm track. "These are like my early demos," he says. "I don't know whether they'll ever see the light of day on a U2 album. It's the stuff that I would work up and bring to the band as a jumping-off point. They're just my solo things."

Although the band is working on the record, it's possible that fans may see U2 live again before they hear a new album. Although Edge wasn't specific on timing, he said the band hoped to get back on the road "sooner rather than later" and that its intention was to make an announcement "fairly soon."

"We had such a great time playing recently," he says. "The way the show came together, we were really happy with it. Also, it seemed, for us, to suggest that there were ways to develop this particular tour using similar production. So we're tossing some ideas around." The group is still figuring out how the show would be different, but the guitarist says, "I think if we go out again, there'll definitely be some changes. It won't be the same show."

Edge says the band is just happy and "really excited" about how the tour went over. "So many new things came out of that tour," he says. "There were so many new moments, live moments, for us. It's very hard for a band that's toured as many years as we have to conjure up something that's totally fresh and different and stand alongside moments from previous tours that are considered 'classic live concerts.' But I think this tour really, in many ways, kind of superseded and surpassed the U2 shows of the past. We're really excited about that and curious to see if we can take it up another level."
