Description
On Saturday, August 16th, 1980 Rainbow took to the stage to headline the first rock festival to be staged at Castle Donington. It was the culmination of the band s tour in support of the hugely successful Down To Earth album, released in 1979, and would prove to be the last live show featuring this particular line-up of the band: Ritchie Blackmore (guitars), Don Airey (keyboards), Graham Bonnet (vocals), Roger Glover (bass) and Cozy Powell (drums). The set featured tracks from the new album alongside classics from earlier in their career. There are virtuoso solo spots for Blackmore, Airey and Powell which serve to highlight the sheer musical prowess in the band. The show climaxes with Ritchie Blackmore destroying his guitar and thrusting it into an amp which promptly bursts into flames before fireworks burst overhead at the conclusion of an explosive show.

Still NOT the complete show on audio and the same DVD from the box set.

I'll bite on this one just to have Stargazer from this show. I used to have the Donnington various artists album from way back and it had this song and All Night Long on it. The Blackmore solo on Stargazer is incredible.

I already have that on last year's box set and I too had that Monsters of Rock on vinyl.

Why they didn't use the whole concert here is a mystery.

Here's the actual setlist:

Setlist

Eyes of the World
Love's No Friend
Since You Been Gone
Stargazer
Man on the Silver Mountain
Catch the Rainbow
Lost in Hollywood
Guitar Solo
Keyboard Solo
Drum Solo
Over the Top (Cozy Powell song) (followed by "Lost In Hollywood" reprise)

Encore:
Lazy
All Night Long
Blues
Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?
Long Live Rock 'n' Roll
Kill the King (Instrumental)

Never knew what Graham Bonnet looked like. He looks so ordinary for a band like Rainbow.

Blackmore never thought Bonnet had that RnR look about him, which he didn't, but he had a great voice.

What Bonnet did with Rainbow, MSG, Alcatrazz, Impellitteri and Blackthorne has him as a Hard Rock icon to me.

I love everything he did with those acts.

If you can believe this, I can't say I ever heard anything by Alcatrazz. What were they like? I see they have a box set out.

Ever since getting this live disc, I've been on a Bonnet kick. I have Assault Attack by MSG which he sang on (and got fired before the tour).

I've pre-ordered the solo stuff post in here and am anxious to check his stuff out before he joined Rainbow.

Just a very powerful voice. That's all I can say.

Now.....

This live disc is good but the sound leaves me baffled. It's not bad, but not great either. I'm guessing the master tapes weren't the best. I can't explain it.... maybe the separation of the instruments?

I have yet to watch the (short) DVD.
