I had major trouble with The original 1974 quad mix as 4.1 presented in DTS 96/24 and AC3 Dolby Digital surround from the box.

My understanding that their was a replacement offer but loss it. Sure would like to hear this version if I can swap it out.

I had that original Steve Wilson Aqualung release actually signed by the man back when J&R Music World was still open downtown. He was very surprised to see it in person and I praised his remastering work of course! He liked that. :)

Question:

On all the releases Wilson does, he only does the remixing correct?

I don't think he does the remastering but maybe he does on occasion?

The Steve Wilson remixes are not remastered they're put on disc flat.

I always say remaster to anything done new but the proper title is remix/reissue.

Is this missing anything that was on the original Wilson version release?

I think that's why I like his stuff so much.

There's just his mixing as opposed to mastering which can be in the hands of good and bad people.

:agree: 1000%

I was reading an article awhile back that stated there used to be NO mastering (other than adding the RIAA eq curve to vinyl, which was necessary), & that changed when radio stations started demanding that each of them wanted to be louder then the competition; apparently some study showed that car radio listeners tended to stay with the loudest station they could find.

It was still a moderate problem in the days of vinyl because if you make vinyl very loud, the needle jumps out of the groove. With digital, that "problem" went away, as did common sense on the part of some labels, some band management & some mastering engineers.

Anyone remember when the folks who did the last UK Beatles remasters considered it a victory when they got permission to "only" use moderate compression?

Bump: This is now up at Amazon, and pre-order links are in the first post along with a packshot. Burning Shed has it as well. Warner UK are calling this the "40th Anniversary Adapted Edition", a repack of the original 2011 release.

(To make things a little clearer I've split this off from our old thread about the previous edition.)

Really glad to see they are re-releasing in this format. I passed on the Collector's Edition last time due to the cost and no need for the vinyl, and bought the 2-CD version. I will buy this again just for the surround sound mix.

As a collector, a big Tull fan and a Steven Wilson remix fan, it's worth double dipping for this book style version to go with my other boom style editions.

I didn't buy it at all. So I may buy this.

Why is it though that the Tull surround mixes only come out on DVD, unlike the Yes ones, which are available on DVD & Blu Ray?

From the Steven Wilson Remixes Facebook:

My remix of Jethro Tull‘s classic 1971 album Aqualung is being reissued on 22nd April 2016. Back in 2011 this was the first in the Jethro Tull 40th anniversary remix series, and since then we've all learned a lot! Subsequently a successful and consistent approach to the releases was established, so the opportunity has been taken to bring the new edition of Aqualung in line, and also to make some corrections and improvements:
- this time it will be in the now standard 2 CD / 2 DVD hardback book form, consistent with the other releases in the series
- all the remixes are now presented as they left my studio, with no additional mastering. The publicity material says that the tracks were "mixed and mastered" by me, but any mastering was just to set the correct relative volumes between tracks, no changes were made to the sound of the mixes.
- there are 3 additional surround sound mixes that were not included on the 2011 release: Just Trying to Be, Wond'ring Aloud, Again, and Wind Up (early version)
- a number of audio glitches on the original edition have been corrected
- the original stereo mixes of Life is a Long Song and Up the Pool have been added to the bonus material
https://www.burningshed.com/store/jethrotull/product/…/7294/
Next in the Tull remix series will be the band's 1969 breakthrough album Stand Up and Living in the Past / Driving Song single, most likely towards the end of 2016 (time permitting).

Yeah; I had a MAJOR audio glitch w/ the original box where when you selected the original QUAD mix a loud pop occurred and it force shut off my amp. Not good, actually freaked me out.

This was my initial play as well. I will probably get this despite having purchased the 2-CD version.

I like the book versions very much.

I have the HD Tracks dl; but if that version was "mastered" & this version isn't (which seems to be what Wilson is saying) I'M IN!

I think it will ONLY be the 7th time I've bought Aqualung (God that "only" is both accurate compared to some other albums & it's PATHETIC!)

Well you are in good company Alan, Steve Wilson will be doing another Tull re-mix (Stand-Up which I love) but Ian lovingly calling Wilson crazy for all the attention he gives to Tull's catalogue.
