sure, i know that the logistics of something like this would be mind-boggling, but there are quite a few artists that have done their share of one-offs for different kinds of projects, whether it be tribute albums, soundtracks, bonus tracks, or just straight up songs included in a compilation album of some kind:
maybe, somewhere down the road, we can do lists of individual artists and what they have done, but for now just artists that could fill at least one CD worth of music with what they have done exclusive of their own albums.
there are probably close to 2 CD's worth of material out there for the following three:
1 - jackson browne
2 - lucinda williams
3 - shawn colvin
and i'm sure there are a whole lot more.

As I just posted in the "Artists that still need a box set collection/retrospective of their career" thread, I think R.E.M. could really use something like this. I think the non-album B-sides to their singles alone amount to about three albums worth of material.

My #1 dream release is still a Iron Maiden Complete Singles Collection...CDs in high quality mini-sleeves replicating the original UK artwork. Non-brickwalled CDs please (although this part of the equation is a near impossibility).

The Stones' Rarities 1971-2003 was pretty half-assed, including a couple tracks taken straight off regular albums and editing some others. The more recent singles box set covering the Atlantic/CBS years went a long way to giving collectors what they'd been waiting for, but there are still a handful of one-offs and alternate mixes that could be compiled.

Oh, and David Bowie. After his recent passing, I was toying once again with the idea of a Bowie at the Movies compilation. And even with numerous deluxe/expanded reissues, and two versions of the Sound + Vision box set, there's lots of material out there.

Sting has a slew of stray tracks, and many of them are excellent. A good rarities collection is long overdue.
