I just read about this online. What an awful year so far.

From TMZ:
Glenn Frey, a founding member and guitarist of the Eagles, has died ... TMZ has learned.
Frey had been battling intestinal issues for months and had surgery in November. We're told in the last few days his condition took a turn for the worse.
Glenn co-wrote and sang most of the Eagles hits, including "Take It Easy," "Tequila Sunrise," "Lyin' Eyes," and "Heartache Tonight," to name a few. He also co-wrote "Hotel California" and "Desperado" with Don Henley and took home 6 Grammys with the band.
After the Eagles' 1980 breakup, Glenn launched a successful solo career, recording numerous hits ... most notably "The Heat Is On" and "You Belong to the City."
Glenn also got into acting, snagging a recurring role on "Miami Vice."
He reunited with the Eagles in '94 for their monster Hell Freezes Over tour and recorded music till the end, releasing what would be his fifth and final solo LP, "After Hours," in 2012.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer had been fighting intestinal issues for awhile but his condition relapsed before the holidays, forcing the Eagles to pull out of their Kennedy Center Honors appearance in December. At the time, the band said he needed major surgery that would require a lengthy recovery.
Glenn was 67. RIP.

It Is With The Heaviest of Hearts That We Announce…
Jan 18, 2016

...the passing of our comrade, Eagles founder, Glenn Frey, in New York City on Monday, January 18th, 2016.

Glenn fought a courageous battle for the past several weeks but, sadly, succumbed to complications from Rheumatoid Arthritis, Acute Ulcerative Colitis and Pneumonia.

The Frey family would like to thank everyone who joined Glenn to fight this fight and hoped and prayed for his recovery.

Words can neither describe our sorrow, nor our love and respect for all that he has given to us, his family, the music community & millions of fans worldwide.

“It's Your World Now”
Written by Glenn Frey and Jack Tempchin
From the Eagles’ Long Road Out of Eden album

A perfect day, the sun is sinkin' low
As evening falls, the gentle breezes blow
The time we shared went by so fast
Just like a dream, we knew it couldn't last
But I'd do it all again
If I could, somehow
But I must be leavin' soon
It's your world now

It's your world now
My race is run
I'm moving on
Like the setting sun
No sad goodbyes
No tears allowed
You'll be alright
It's your world now

Even when we are apart
You'll always be in my heart
When dark clouds appear in the sky
Remember true love never dies

But first a kiss, one glass of wine
Just one more dance while there's still time
My one last wish: someday, you'll see
How hard I tried and how much you meant to me

It's your world now
Use well your time
Be part of something good
Leave something good behind
The curtain falls
I take my bow
That's how it's meant to be
It's your world now
It's your world now
It's your world now

Oh, wow. This hurts. Eagles were a huge part of my childhood, and Glenn was my favorite for reasons I can't explain.

One of These Nights was the first LP I ever bought with my own money.

First concert I ever paid for with my own money, too.

See our bands while we still can.

WTF! I can't believe this. He always seemed to me to be so strong and vibrant. I am total shock. He was always one of my favorites. I can't say anymore at this time.

Wow - I knew he was sick, but I had no idea it was this bad. I was never a huge Eagles fan, but I really learned to appreciate more of their stuff as I got older. And yeah, Frey came off as a total dick in the documentary - and to his credit, he didn't downplay it - but that doesn't take away from the music. There's so much quality there in both the music and the harmonies - so many layers to explore. It's not my favorite song, by far, but every time I hear that very first line in "Seven Bridges Road", I'm 16 or 17 again.

Dan has it right, and my buddy and I have said the same thing for the last few years. I don't know how long I'll get to go to concerts, and as importantly, we don't know how long these guys can keep it up or how long they'll be around. So I try not to miss someone I really want to see, if at all possible.

RIP, Glenn.

Behind the scenes many of us are fighting illness, and I'm glad Lemmy, Bowie and Frey all had their privacy respected and that it comes as a surprise to us.

This is another sad one.

I remember sometime in the 90's (?) Glenn being very ill with stomach problems that required surgery and Eagles dates overseas to be cancelled.

This was from the same issue.

I heard an interview clip with Elton John talking about how great it was that Bowie was able to work through his illness in privacy. So, cheers to those guys for being able to deal with this stuff in peace rather than having their suffering documented every step of the way. FWIW, I did see a pic of Bowie that was taken two days before he died, and you couldn't see anything really amiss in the pic.

And I'm always hoping things are going well for you, Pete.

From JD Souther on Facebook:

Glenn Frey was my first songwriting partner and best friend when we set out to realize our dreams of making great music in Los Angeles. Our first year together will always seem like yesterday to me. His amazing capacity for the big joke and that brilliant groove that lived inside him are with me, even now, in this loss and sorrow. I will miss him every day but then…he is always here, isn’t he? I can’t say any more than that for now. The music and the love are indestructible.

Rest Quietly Dear Little Brother
You are greatly loved and missed
John David Souther

From Don Henley's website:

DON HENLEY ON GLENN FREY
“He was like a brother to me; we were family, and like most families, there was some dysfunction. But, the bond we forged 45 years ago was never broken, even during the 14 years that the Eagles were dissolved.

We were two young men who made the pilgrimage to Los Angeles with the same dream: to make our mark in the music industry — and with perseverance, a deep love of music, our alliance with other great musicians and our manager, Irving Azoff, we built something that has lasted longer than anyone could have dreamed. But, Glenn was the one who started it all. He was the spark plug, the man with the plan. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of popular music and a work ethic that wouldn’t quit. He was funny, bullheaded, mercurial, generous, deeply talented and driven. He loved his wife and kids more than anything.

We are all in a state of shock, disbelief and profound sorrow. We brought our two-year “History of the Eagles Tour” to a triumphant close at the end of July and now he is gone. I’m not sure I believe in fate, but I know that crossing paths with Glenn Lewis Frey in 1970 changed my life forever, and it eventually had an impact on the lives of millions of other people all over the planet. It will be very strange going forward in a world without him in it. But, I will be grateful, every day, that he was in my life. Rest in peace, my brother. You did what you set out to do, and then some.”

-Don Henley
