By Grabthar's hammer, this news stinks. :(

Thanks for the amazing memories, Mr. Rickman. A rare person who could play immensely snooty to perfection but did not seem to actually have a trace of it in himself. He seemed to have no career regrets and a sincere appreciation for the fans and the films he was in. And a voice that could melt the screen.

He excelled at playing villains (his Sheriff of Nottingham was the best thing about Kevin Costner's Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves), but he was also great as a romantic lead in Sense and Sensibility. And so many other roles. A hugely talented actor.

Hilarious (with just the right touch of pathos) in Galaxy Quest.

I just rewatched him in Quigley Down Under. But yeah, I can't think of a role he played where I didn't enjoy his work. Sorry to see him go so soon.

For me he will always be Hans Gruber one of the best villains in one of the best action movies Die Hard.

RIP

That's the first time I ever saw him and he was wonderful in that role and his sneering arrogance was perfect! He was a first-rate bad guy.

Hans was one of the great villains, and not just mad man or a guy out for vengeance - or even a petty thief. He was an exceptional thief - and probably a sociopath - killing all those people just to cover his tracks. You gotta love a villain like that. Smart. Arrogant. Ruthless. Good with accents. Had his priorities in good order. Savvy. Commanding. If you were a bad guy, you could easily follow a guy like that. And what a death. The slo mo fall was great - though the long distance shot sucked, as many do. That falling straight down without rotation of any sort just like you're in a harness being lowered on a cable really isn't impressing anyone. But still. Great Movie. Great Villain. Great Hero. Great Ending. Might be one of my favorite movies of all time.

Thanks, Alan. Sorry to lose you all too soon. R.I.P

Just saw a trailer for a movie he will be in later this Winter (Eye In The Sky) about drones and should we attack bad guys even if their is a chance for collateral damage. It was a bit shocking to see him suddenly once again on the big screen.

Well, it was his first movie, so it's the first time most of us saw him. :) He was fantastic though, agreed!
