I didn't see this thread yet and wanted to start my list while it was still fresh in my mind

So the first movie I saw this year was a present I got for Ian, I like to buy him old random cheesy movies and this year I bought him a combo pack of biker movies, cause I felt it went with an entertaining theme of manly presents I was getting him (I got him a robe and two different types of scotch and put one in each pocket, with some cigars and these biker movies, it entertained me anyway heh) So we watched Angel Unchained, it turned out to be a stealth hippie movie and not manly at all. It was fun enough in a bad movie sort of way. I hope the next one will be a bit more entertaining as it has Bruce Dern in it and I tend to find him fun to watch.

This morning I woke up early. I was still tired but couldn't get back to sleep so I watched About Time on Netflix. I quite enjoyed it. It was not a crazy UK comedy, maybe more along the lines of Four Weddings and a Funeral funny, but if nothing else Bil Nighy was fun to watch and incredibly endearing as the father, kinda got a bit weepy for part of it if we're being honest.

Today I saw my first theatre movie for the year. We had planned to see Hateful Eight in the theatre on New Years eve, but alas it was not playing in town til after. We found out yesterday however that it had opened and we saw it today. I quite enjoyed it and so did everyone else who went with us. It was one of his more talky ones so I don't know if it will be as popular, but I really enjoy those a lot of the time so I was quite happy with it.

I saw Room this afternoon. A very solid movie. I thought the kid did great job.

Per usual for me, I'm only listing movies I see in theaters.

1) Concussion. NFL villains take on saintly doctor over brain damage in football players. Strong stuff, but not gonna make me stop watching games. Solid work by Will Smith and Albert Brooks.

Yikes, if I only listed movies I saw in theaters, my list would likely never be more than 5 movies a year.

But I will start off with a movie that I did see in a theater (the first of 3 I hope to see this year)

1) Star Wars: The Force Awakens - What a thrilling return to a galaxy far, far away. Plot holes an criticisms be damned, this was a fun ride.

I am doing this mostly for my personal interest and I'm kind of interested in when I saw a movie for the first time so I'm going to stick to separating them, I could totally see why Jimbo would be good with only listing theatre movies. I wish we had movie passes (or that I was just rich) here, I would totally see a lot more movies in the theatre. :)

I thought movie passes in Canada were provided by the government, like healthcare.

I have to say, seeing a movie in a theater last week was one of the most uncomfortable experiences I've ever had in my movie going life. I might be just getting too old to relax properly in those seats, or my muscles just ached that day, or they may have been exceptionally bad seats, but compared to the comfort of an easy chair at home, it was practically torture.

Less and less, I think, I'll be willing to go see a movie in a theater, particularly when the price of a movie ticket and the price of a DVD or Blu-Ray are so comparable, and with high Def big screen T.V.s at home and an easy chair, pause button, and bathroom so handy, I'm just having to wait often less than a year to see the movie multiple times (if I wish) in the comfort of my own home.

In the meantime, while waiting, there's plenty of good T.V.

Yeah. I'm probably just old. :luddite:

Unless your local theater has the really large screens, dolby sound, and comfortable modern stadium style seating, it's not worth it. Most smaller towns that I've visited and passed time going to a movie do not have that.

I seem to have a worse experience every time I go (mainly from people talking). For me, theater trips are strictly limited to movies I just can't wait to see. Either "event movies" or movies that are an event to me personally.

We are lucky around here that we now have multiple choices for IMAX and Real 3D theaters with reclining seating that you can reserve from your house and just arrive at the last second avoiding any wait and those terrible terrible commercials and trailers.
Even my daughter remarked the other day when we saw Joy, the trailers give everything away and they do. Sometimes the entire plot.
Take the new Superman vs Batman, we now know that the two have an adversarial relationship. Then a new baddie shows up created by the villian, then a new superhero shows up to help, and we even know who the new superhero is and who is the villian behind all the conflict. Now we just need to sit back and watch explosions and the happy ending.

Oddly enough, the trailer for Joy was one of the few that didn't give away much plot.

Well, with the title we knew that Superman and Batman had an adversarial relationship. We've known for over a year that Wonder Woman would be in costume for the movie. Lex Luthor was one of the first characters cast, so we knew he was the main villain. The only real giveaway in the trailer was the three of them facing Doomsday, and rumor has it that he isn't the big main threat. The trailer is full of spoilers if you have no access to social media and had no idea that there was a Batman V Superman film in the works. The main flaw is that the scenes seem to be edited together in sequence, so it comes across as a mini-movie.

The broader audience for trailers is precisely the people who aren't paying much attention -- which is the case for me for most of the movies that come out. They almost all make me feel like I've seen the movie. And that feeling usually persists after I've seen it (they don't hold much back).

Yes Joy really didn't give anything away in its trailer but it is an odd movie. Most films follow a formula.

1) Star Wars: The Force Awakens -

2) Vacation - Not a reboot, but a continuation, this time with Rusty at the helm. Not destined to become a beloved classic like # 1 and # 3

We just like the experience of seeing a movie n the theatre still. We tend to go with people and make a bit of an event of it.

So what?

If the movie is good, it will still be good even if you know all. If it's bad, it would still be bad even if you hadn't watched the trailer.

Given the number of movies I see you'd think this would be a huge problem for me, but it isn't. I almost never have a bad experience in the theatre.

That just isn't true -- I have a much more cathartic experience on the first time viewing if I don't know what happens.

With all the talk about avoiding spoilers on the internet, I would think you would have picked up by now that a lot of people are different from you, in the way they experience movies.

I should watch the trailer for John Dies at the End to see if they give away the whole plot.

We pretty much expect at this point that the bigger, mainstream movies will give away a lot of information before they're released. That's what makes indie movies such a treat for us. We've gone into some movies not knowing anything more than the name of the movie. It's also a draw for the Bollywood movies that are in the American theaters now. Some of those, I go in not knowing if they're action movies or comedies.
