Blackstar is David Bowie's 28th studio album and his first since stunning the world in 2013 with the critically acclaimed 'The Next Day'. The release date for Blackstar coincides with David's birthday. The album's title track is the first single, and is accompanied by a short film visual by the acclaimed director Johan Renck. Music from the Blackstar single has been featured in the opening title credits and trailers for the new TV series The Last Panthers. The series, also directed by Johan Renck, began airing across Europe in late October, 2015, and will premiere in the U.S. on SundanceTV in Spring, 2016. In addition to the CD and digital albums, a special die-cut vinyl LP package will also be available.

New David Bowie Album, ‘Blackstar,’ Reportedly Coming Out in January

Rumors of new music from David Bowie have reached a fever pitch, with reports surfacing today (Oct. 24) of an album that will arrive on Jan. 8, 2016. The record is expected to be called Blackstar, after the theme song he wrote for The Last Panthers.

According to the Times, Blackstar‘s seven songs clock in at 45 minutes and “may well be the oddest work yet” from Bowie. They called it “an album of long, jazzy jams mixed with the kind of driving beat pioneered by ’70s German bands Can and Kraftwerk,” and said that it was recorded at New York’s The Magic Shop with a band comprised of jazz musicians.

The 68 seconds of the title track that was released three weeks ago is just the tip of the iceberg. It’s apparently 10 minutes long and features “Gregorian chants, a soul section, various electronic beats and bleeps, and Bowie’s distinctive vocal.” Even though “Blackstar” is expected to be released as a single in mid-November, Bowie is not providing a radio edit.

In 2013, Bowie surprised the music world — also on his 66th birthday — when he released “Where Are We Now?” and saying that it was from his first album in 10 years, The Next Day, which arrived a few months later.

However, those expecting a tour shouldn’t hold their breath. Two weeks ago, U.K. concert promoter John Giddings revealed that Bowie had told him personally that he had retired from the road. Bowie has not toured since 2004, when an emergency angioplasty caused him to cancel a month of European dates.

Looking forward to a Bowie release than the Elton release at this late date in their careers.

i find it fascinating how different aging musicians either gravitate towards unfettered creativity or towards redundant banality.
you be the judge.

The last few have been hit & miss for me; but there have been some great moments on most of them.

and Geff, that's been how i feel about the entire Bowie catalog - with a few exceptions only.
there are but a few of his albums that i like all the way through, but i'll be damned if they don't all have at least one gem -
frequently not the hit-single.

Same here. I love so much of his stuff, but the only albums I really love start to end are The Man Who Sold The World and Low. Diamond Dogs comes close.

I'm very lucky that I have tickets to see a new musical/play called Lazarus which is Off-Broadway starring Michael C Hall and the music of David Bowie (based on The Man Who Fell From Earth). Combine this with the new Bowie album news and the year is ending on a good note!

I've always said that film should have used the Ziggy album as a soundtrack.

So far I'm thinking Outside minus Reeves Gabrels...

i'm a completist with Bowie, even though i don't care for at least half of his output.
why? because the material i DO like, thrills me in a unique way.
there's are only 2 of his albums that i enjoy from beginning to end:
"Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)" and "Outside."

and Tricky Kid might have this new one pegged.
and hopefully it will be as tasty as "Outside" and inside as well.

Different tastes: I like about half of Outside. I also like it better w/o the talking segments; I made a burned version with only the music. I really do like the Outside tour, though.

I'm almost a completest. Missing:Buddha of Suburbia, Absolute Beginners (though I think I have that song on some best of), Labyrinth & Peter & The Wolf.

"Buddha of Suburbia" is a snore-fest - "Absolute Beginners" is redundant, when ya think about it - and "Labyrinth" needs a good remaster and expansion,

An album I thought was strong late in his career was Earthling.

Bump: Added the cover image to the first post. A provisional pre-order link is up too, but Amazon's listing page is not yet live.
