This is the message in small print on the back of the DVD sets for season two of "Happy Days" and "Laverne & Shirley". Hopefully these changes aren't major, but I sure wish they hadn't been done.

Same thing with season 2 of Mork & Mindy that I just picked up at Discorama. Looks like it's gonna be a trend.

As opposed to the original home entertainment version... the one that was broadcast into our homes when the shows originally aired!!!!!

I believe these are due to issues with our friends at the RIAA & copyrights. My understanding is that is the reason Ally McBeal is out in Europe & not in the US for one example.
The sad thing is that several of the major film & record labels are essentially the same company (Sony & Universal to name a couple).

I would love to see a list of which songs have been replaced, and what they are replacing them with.

It's too bad that they can't get this all sorted out, because to me, there is a very natural fit between DVD releases and soundtracks. Wouldn't it be cool if more DVD releases came bundled with a CD soundtrack? If these people can't get it together enough to get the original music itself on the DVDs, there's no chance of what I'm suggesting.

And what pisses me off is that there are plenty of sets that DO pay the royalty rates to get the proper rights to keep the music intact (Miami Vice and SNL's First Season comes to mind).
So, obviously it CAN be done, even if the retail price goes up a tick.
Instead they go cheap...the consumer deserves better, or at the very least the chance to elect whether or not they'd be willing to pay a higher price.
I'd pay $99 to get a complete WKRP...

I can see "The Wonder Years" bieng a complete mess if it ever gets released. Last night I watched one of the first episodes on TV, and I counted 5 different songs all within a 10 minute time frame. I dont remember them now, but "I am a Rock" by S&G was one of them.

I've read that like Ally McBeal, the cost of music rights is also why Wonder years has never seen dvd (although a few episodes were released on vhs by Laser Light/Delta & they did some budget cd comps of songs that were aired on the show)

We've discussed it before, but I gotta believe this is the reason we haven't seen a DVD release of the 80s sitcom Square Pegs. I really wish I had a TiVo back when TV Land reran these over and over again, a couple years ago.

they did the same thing for all 3 box sets of roswell they kept the opening song but all the other music was changed to newer bands.they didn't want to pay to use the original songs that were in the tv show when broadcasted,i assume thats the same reason here

One reason why I will only rent these discs, not own em. If their not complete, no sale.

No you don't. But if you must, click on this...

One of the most egregious offenses of the Happy Days season two set is the subtitution of the season three opening theme in place of Bill Haley's "Rock Around The Clock." They retained it as the opening music on season one, but went really on the cheap in terms of licensing this time around.

I have some of the DVD's from the past three Winter Olympic games (primarily for the hockey) and all of the music from the figure skating competitions has been replaced by generic music. In other words, the music you hear is not the music to which the athletes were actually skating at the time. Again, I have to wonder--how much money is at stake here?
