Note the prominence of music in this study: Quote: Teens spend more time on media each day than sleeping, survey finds
You’ve probably seen it – a teenager rocking to music blasting from headphones while also texting, checking out Facebook and watching TV.
And, supposedly, doing homework.
For those people who date back to pre-handheld-device days and who found it hard enough to concentrate on homework even without digital distractions, the sight of multitasking teens is mind-boggling.
It’s also more prevalent than you might think.
A new report by Common Sense Media, a San Francisco-based non-profit that tracks children and their technology use, finds that teens age 13 to 18 spend almost nine hours a day – that’s longer than they usually sleep – on "entertainment media," which includes things like checking out social media, music, gaming or online videos.
And that’s not including time spent using media for school or homework.
Meanwhile, tweens – those aged 10 to 12 – are not far behind, consuming about six hours of similar content, according to the report released Tuesday.
The study also found that half of teens say they often or sometimes watch TV (51%), use social networking (50%), text (60%) and listen to music (76%) while doing homework. You can bet that those figures include some who do all four at the same time.
"As a parent and educator, there's clearly more work to be done around the issue of multi-tasking," said James Steyer, founder and CEO of Common Sense Media. "Nearly two-thirds of teens today tell us they don't think watching TV or texting while doing homework makes any difference to their ability to study and learn, even though there's more and more research to the contrary."
For old-media diehards, it is perhaps surprising that listening to music and TV are still the favorites among teens and tweens, with about two-thirds of teenagers saying they listen to music every day, and 58% reporting daily consumption of TV. By contrast, 45% reported using social media every day and only 36% said they enjoyed that activity "a lot." Twice as many said they really enjoyed their music.
Television is the favorite activity of preteens, according to the report, with 62% of age 8- to 12-year-olds saying they watched every day.
Boys are much more likely to play video games than girls. The survey found male teenagers spent an average of 56 minutes a day gaming, while girls devoted seven minutes. Girls spent more time on social media or reading than boys.
Ethnicity also plays a role, with black teenagers spending more time with media than other groups – an average of 11 hours and 13 minutes each day. Latino teens spend just over nine hours and white teens spend eight hours, 48 minutes, the study found.
"The census really sheds light on how different media use is for different kids,” said Steyer, “from boys to girls, low-income to more affluent, and kids from all ethnic backgrounds.”
The report is based on interviews with 2,658 young people earlier this year, according to Common Sense Media, with the results having a margin of error of plus or minus just under 2%. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nati ... s/75088256

Hell, I did that in college before handheld devices - TV, phone, boom box, homework. I have to have headphones on at work - conversations around me distract me. Music and/or podcasts help me block out distractions and focus. When I work at home, the afternoon is spent with the stereo cranking out the tunes. Of course, given how I've turned out...

Eli dropped his phone in the toilet this morning. I thought he was going to faint.

the phone are attached to their hands...in i truly believe, without being the least bit factious, that they would give up a hand or foot before they would give up their phone. it the single most important thing in the lives, bar none.

My last girlfriend (in 2012) was like that. Our one & only argument was when her stoopid f'ing phone woke us up at 6 am. I never saw her again (her choice).

Hey, remember that episode of "The Brady Bunch" where Mike Brady misses an important phone call because the kids won't stay off the phone, so he has the phone company install a pay phone?
Or the episode of "The Patty Duke Show" where Patty and Cathy and Ross won't stay off the phone, so Martin tries to regulate their phone time?
I guess not.

These aren't just "phones", they're comprehensive media devices with internet access. Think about all the time you spend NOW online, or listening to music, or watching TV, or yes, even making phone calls, and then maintain that no, you certainly wouldn't have similarly exploited those resources had they been available when you were a teenager.

You are so correct here Tricky Kid which simply reaffirms I feel very fortunate to have lived in a different time. Rick A. PS I worked in I.T. for 30 years before I retired.

it really is sad, very sad. Why? I stopped carrying around an atlas the year I got my smartphone. GPS with navigation and maps built in. I stopped using phone books as well. Look up numbers online. I read 70% of my books and comics on a phone or tablet. I listen to all my music on my car stereo streamed from my phone instead of carrying around a bunch of CDs that I'd have to rotate in and out as I wanted to listen to different things. It is my bedside alarm clock, my calendar, and my grocery list. It is insanely convenient to carry one small device around in your pocket rather than piles of physical items in a backpack or something. Nothing sad about it at all, IMO. To me the smartphone is one of the greatest non-essential inventions of modern times (I can't put it up there with running water and medicine, hence the qualifier. ) I would be lost without it.

I don't remember my dad being pissed when we replaced the slide rule and abacus with calculators.
My senior year of high school, a portion of one of our classes was devoted to life studies. They taught us the basics of being an adult... How to write a check, what a mortgage was, etc. One class was spent teaching us how to read a newspaper. The proper way to fold and hold it while reading, etc. I think at that point they were looking for ways to fill the classes.

On my course syllabi, I clearly state that students are not to use cellphones during class and that those who do face grade penalties at the end of the semester. However, no matter how many times I ask students to put them away during class time, many students repeatedly take them out and text or surf. At this point in the semester, I've stopped saying anything. As Renny said, it's a losing battle. At the same time, there are more instances of students asking me about something that I literally just explained seconds before, and there seem to be more students each semester who are registered at the school with learning disabilities...I can't help but think that the constant distraction of personal devices is contributing to shorter attention spans and less ability to focus.

Or they think they're being sneaky about it...and they spend a lot of time in class smiling down and their crotches where they're fiddling around with their hands down there. And they think it's unfair if you ask them to explain back some concept you were just attempting to enlighten them about.

That's just disrespectful. Using your phone as a tool to aid your learning in lieu of a physical book or paper is one thing; playing around on it while the instructor is teaching you is incredibly rude. I would ask them to leave, especially if I had to explain something again to them because of it. I wasn't advocating that kind of use above, to be clear!

The problem with the device is that it is not a specific book (a la History book) or specific white paper, what it is is Pandora's box. Very tough to resist.
