I needed some help on recording TV from a PC TV tuner. Basically, I want to know is there any software that can record to the MP4 format directly. I have tried googling this, but it is unclear if this is possible. I have a TV tuner and with WinTV. It records to the .ts format which makes a good quality file very large. Do you need a specific tv tuner and specific software or is there software out there to record to the mp4 format? Thanks in advance for any help on this.

I've dealt with this.

Yes, there are several brands of software that will convert, The issue is do you have a widescreen set? If so, you're fine (one option is Corel Video Studio). There are many other options (some free).

The problem is if you have an old crt tv like me; the ts recorders pillarbox the file, & though several brands of software say they fix that, I haven't found one that works yet. If you have a wide Screen set, it shouldn't be a big deal.

One important thing: record to a hard drive; do NOT record direct to a flash drive or you will likely experience motion jiter, as the USB flash drives can't write the data fast enough in real time.

I'll also pm you the names of a couple other forums to post the question in.

Thanks! I have a question. When you say several brands of software that will convert do you mean during the actual recording or convert it after the fact?

After the fact. Fairly high bit rate MKV rarely adds visible artifacts unless you've got great eyes.
