Description
Between 1965 and 1966 Bob Dylan recorded three albums that many believe changed the course of modern music: Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde.

The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Volume 12 takes you inside the studio during the recording of those three albums. With a staggering wealth of unreleased songs, outtakes, rehearsals and alternate versions - The Cutting Edge provides a unique insight into a legendary icon's creative process.

For what it's worth, the usual Dylan online outlets have zeroed in on a single message board post which "suggests" that the next Bootleg Series volume will cover the years 1965-66. This would make sense, in that material from 1965 seems poised for quasi-release in another copyright-extension EU box set at the end of the year anyway.

The post in question:
Quote:
I have just had some photos accepted by Sony for the forthcoming "BOB DYLAN BOOTLEG SERIES 12". As they are from 1966, and as the next "50th Anniversary Copyright" collection is due for 1965, I would like to suggest it will cover 1965/66 from BIABH to BOB with the 66tour as well. In the course of conversations with "the powers that be", apparently it will be issued as a double CD, a 5CD De Luxe version with 140 page book and an EXTREMELY limited 18CD version.

A while ago there were rumors, and they still persist on some Dylan boards, that there would be an 18 CD box of "Blonde On Blonde" material. SIGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH One can only hope.

I thought the next Bootleg Series was supposed to be the Blood On The Tracks sessions with New York version of the album etc.

If the previous "50th Anniversary Collection" copyright extension sets are any indication, it's hard to say what 1965 recordings might or might not show up. According to "Still On The Road" here are a couple of "PA recordings" and an audience tape of concerts late in the year. However, a fairly generous number of studio outtakes and alternates from BIABH and H61 have seen official release on titles ranging from "The Bootleg Series" to the "Highway 61 Interactive" CD-ROM; the 1962, 1963 and 1964 sets have mostly sought to contain only those studio outtakes that are (a) complete takes, and (b) have never shown up on any official audio or video release, in whole or in part, including accidentally (early pressings of "Freewheelin'").

One thing I've noticed is that apparently only a single track from the 1965 UK tour filmed for the "Don't Look Back" documentary has ever shown up on a Dylan CD--a live version of "To Ramona" which first showed up as a DVD bonus track also appeared on the Japan-only "1961-2000" live anthology. Not sure if there are issues with licensing the recordings from D.A. Pennebaker; what seems more likely is that as tour was Dylan's final acoustic tour before going electric, performance-wise he wasn't at his most inspired. The bottom line is that if one has the 2-disc DVD version of "Don't Look Back" from 2007, one has all of the officially released material from this tour.

Still..it's always tantalizing to consider what might remain in the Dylan vault that hasn't yet been released or bootlegged.

Here's a somewhat informal list of Bob's officially released 1965 output. Material originally released in 1965-66 is in boldface, tracks unavailable on CD are underlined, with the exception of the alternate version of "From A Buick 6", which was officially released on a now-impossible to find Japanese CD about twenty years ago. As mentioned, much footage and audio from the 1965 UK tour can be found on the 2007 "Don't Look Back" DVD; footage of Dylan's controversial Newport Folk Festival appearance in July is on both the "No Direction Home" and "The Other Side Of The Mirror" DVDs. Finally, sources disagree on the exact recording date for "Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?"--either October 5 or November 30th, although Bob was backed at both sessions by The Hawks, later known as The Band.

Interesting list but is it not the case that both of the last two Bootleg Series releases (Another Self Portrait and Basement Tapes) contained tracks that no one knew about before and that that could happen here again (hopefully) ?

The existing info on the January "Bringing It All Back Home" sessions is particularly contradictory, particularly in light of Steve Boone's recollection of his work at the January 14th session (for which the cited recording sheets apparently fail to list the number of takes recorded.) While it might seem unlikely that a vast amount of leftover material exists for an album recorded in three days--only seven months after the session for his previous album, and six months before the sessions for his subsequent album--with Dylan, there's no telling. Tantalizingly, no treasure trove of Columbia acetates for BIABH has ever surfaced on bootleg or anything like that. One snippet from the January 13 acoustic session that has popped up on bootleg is "You Don't Have To Do That":

Speaking of Dylan, and speaking of fifty years ago, it was fifty years ago tonight that Bob Dylan horrified the nation by playing the Newport Folk Festival backed by a band playing electrically amplified instruments.

Bannings: If you're not nice
Bump: This has been pencilled in for early November. Details from Sony's initial solicitation are in the first post. Not pre-orderable yet, but soon. (And there will likely also be a distilled version with less discs.)

My favorite Dylan period by far. I can't wait for this.

People on Expectingrain.com are speculating that there's an entire disc of "Like A Rolling Stone". I can understand why some would find this boring and repetitive, but It would something that I'd love to hear.

Is the track list in that first post speculative?

It's official, from Sony's solicitation.

I'll get the 2 CD version

The mega box of Basement Tapes was mostly not at decent musical quality for my liking
Some people loved it........

A few alternate takes of "Like A Rolling Stone" could be heard on the old "Highway 61 Interactive" CD-ROM released...good God, twenty years ago. The thing is, the master take of LARS is a fairly early take and it is clear that the alternate takes were lacking. To listen to what looks to be the entire LARS session should be fascinating, although I don't know that it will be a disc that I'd play very often. I have another disc that is full of nothing but Elvis Presley running through take after take of "Loving You" for an hour or so. Not the sort of disc I've ever taken with me on a long drive.

To me, the best news is that I will be able to knock two major Dylan rarities from my bucket list (and delete them from my Itunes): the "mistaken" versions of "From A Buick 6" and "Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window". The alternate "From A Buick 6" was actually the default version in Japan for decades, even appearing on a pricey, ultra-rare Japanese CD back in the early 90's. On the other hand, conspicuous by its absence is the single version of "If You Gotta Go, Go Now" that was released with backing vocal overdubs in Europe in 1967.

Finally, I think we're going to know a lot more about certain sessions than was known previously. Details of the March 1966 Nashville sessions have always been sort of murky.
