A lot of artists seem to be doing this as of late. I THINK the first CONTEMPORARY artist who went there was Sarah McLachlan's Freedom sessions.
IMO, as a GENERAL STATEMENT, this sort of thing tends to work best with Jazz & prog, where there is room to improvise. Most of these in rock are inferior to the originals.

Listened to this last night. I was prepared to be bored, but I really enjoyed it. The reinterpretations are interesting, and the recording quality is first rate, which helps. Haven't looked at the DVD yet.
