Booster Gold/Blue Beetle Movie Reportedly In Development

Quote:
Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow showrunner Greg Berlanti will produce a feature film teaming Blue Beetle and Booster Gold, The Tracking Board reports.

El Mayimbe, founder of Heroic Hollywood, tweeted out the article, implicitly giving it his stamp of approval after building to "big DC news" coming up this hour. He later followed up with an article saying that Zak Penn of X2: X-Men United and Marvel's The Avengers fame is being eyed to write.

Booster Gold is a time-traveling hero from the 25th Century who, after being publicly disgraced in his own time, traveled to the past for a shot at redemption.

Blue Beetle is a genius inventor who took on the mantle -- but not the powers -- of his heroic mentor and college professor, the Golden Age Blue Beetle Dan Garrett. Garrett wore a scarab that granted the bearer powers, but Ted Kord relied on his wits, martial arts training and engineering skills to make it as a hero.

Each of the two had their own ongoing series shortly after the Crisis on Infinite Earths thirty years ago, which were then cancelled and the pair ended up on the Justice League during Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire's run. It was during this time that they became inseparable. DeMatteis has often referred to them as the "Laurel and Hardy of the superhero set."

That comic sensibility will reportedly be on display in the Blue and Gold movie, according to TTB.

In the comics, Booster Gold's son is Rip Hunter, the Time Master who is at the center of Berlanti's forthcoming CW series DC's Legends of Tomorrow. Syfy had originally optioned Booster Gold for a series, which never made it to pilot. Legends of Tomorrow producer Andrew Kreisberg was to have written the script and produced the series.

Long ago, Booster Gold was rumored to be in development as one of a number of mid-budget films including Suicide Squad meant to keep the DC brand alive in between Justice League-themed mega-blockbusters. More recently, Legends of Tomorrow executive producer Phil Klemmer said that Booster wasn't going to be on the show because there were bigger things in store for the character.

Very recently, Nathan Fillion went viral after telling an audience at Wizard World Chicago that he would like to play Booster Gold.

The article goes into a lot of detail over how many times BG and BB almost made it to the screen, and yet fail to highlight the one time that they actually did...

Warner Working On a Booster Gold Movie

Things might be lightening up for the Warner Bros. cinematic stable of DC Comics characters. This August's Suicide Squad is already being marketed as an irreverent corrective to the sludgy darkness of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and now it appears Warner might be tackling one of the DC mythos's most delightful characters: Booster Gold. Birth.Movies.Death — building on some information from Cleats and Capes and the Fatman on Batman podcast — is reporting that screenwriter Zack Stentz is working on a Booster Gold flick.

For those not in the know, Booster Gold's setup is uniquely goofy. Created by Dan Jurgens, he's a vain athlete-turned-night-watchman from the future who steals some superpowered technology from a museum, illicitly travels back in time, and tries to make himself wealthy and famous in the present. (Of course, he eventually learns some measure of humility and becomes a bona fide hero, etc., etc.) Flash, Arrow, and Supergirl producer Greg Berlanti is apparently producing the movie, which makes all the sense in the world — his take on DC heroes is far lighter than that of his cinematic counterparts. Just look at the picture in this post! Wouldn't you love to see a guy like that try to make Batfleck laugh?

Update: In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Berlanti confirmed that the movie is in development with a script by Stentz, adding, "I'd probably direct that, or I would want to."

Greg Berlanti’s Booster Gold Movie Won’t Be in DC Cinematic Universe

Back in May, superhero fans displeased with the DC cinematic universe's sludge-heavy darkness saw a ray of light when the world learned a Booster Gold movie was in development. The character is a humorous DC Comics mainstay, a cocky gent from the future who steals some high-tech equipment, travels back in time, and seeks fame and fortune as a superhero in the present. What's more, the potential film was being developed and possibly directed by Greg Berlanti, the super-producer behind sunny DC TV properties like The Flash and Supergirl. But as Vulture learned during our talk with Berlanti, it looks like Ol' Boosty won't be inhabiting the same shared universe as Batfleck and the murderous Henry Cavill Superman.

"As of right now we have no connective tissue to those worlds," Berlanti said when asked if the movie would be part of the DC Extended Universe that already includes Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Suicide Squad (with Wonder Woman and Justice League following in 2017). "It'd be a separate thing." He also said the project emerged from a long-dead Booster Gold TV show idea he was working on with longtime producing collaborator Andrew Kreisberg that "never got off the ground." After it bit the dust, Berlanti and Kreisberg got into talks with DC Entertainment president and chief creative officer (and reported new film co-chief) Geoff Johns, and the topic of the producing duo doing a movie came up.

Working with Zack Stentz, a writer who had penned an acclaimed second-season episode of The Flash and co-written on Marvel properties X-Men: First Class and Thor, they fleshed out the story. If the movie comes to pass, it will be an interesting departure for the superhero-movie world, not just as a rare lighthearted DC flick, but also because it will exist as a standalone story. The name of the game these days is complex cinematic universes, so it's interesting that Warner Bros. seems prepared to consider stepping outside that system, however tentatively and preliminarily.

This made me laugh. I do wish they'd spend the money and do this properly though. Ant-Man and GOTG proved that humour can work well in a superhero movie, I'm not sure why they wouldn't want a DC equivalent to try and reach that particular audience.
