Description
"Looking for a Good Time" is the album's defining song. The inspiration for the album came from hearing "Superfly" in the booze aisle at the supermarket and watching how the shoppers reacted. "Looking..." captures the upful mood of Curtis Mayfield in 1970 perfectly; if anything ever made me wish I could dance, this is it. The namechecks in the lyrics say it all, really: 'Isley Brothers and Curtis and Sly and Bobby Womack too'; it's perfect. "Words Fail Me" is a mature love ballad with very tasteful backing (even drummer Tom Seguso is reined in), muted horns and a lovely flugelhorn solo from Chris Anderson; Johnny's voice is sublime and it would melt a heart of stone. "Walking on a Thin Line" has a faintly menacing Latin feel evoking Isaac Hayes, The Temptations and The O'Jays but still totally Jukes. What comes next is a very rare thing indeed; an instrumental on a Jukes album. "Klank" is the love child of "Soul Finger" and "Third Stone from the Sun" with harmonica and tenor sax solos; they're allowed to have fun as well, you know.

"Ain't Nobody's Bizness" is a bit of light-hearted fun. I'm Not That Lonely" totally nails the Motown sound (Four Tops, anyone?) while "The Heart Always Knows" harks back to a much earlier time (Sam Cooke, or maybe The Cascades). It's a slow, gentle ballad. The album's close, "Reality" takes its influence from the psychedelic soul of the late sixties/early seventies.

Working with Jeff Kazee and the latest incarnation of The Jukes, Southside Johnny's turned out a modern soul classic.

The album is in stock and available now from Amazon as a lossless CD-R or as an MP3 download. Have a listen to the opening track, "Spinning":

Southside Johnny's website is selling an autographed version, at twice the price, which will begin shipping in September. I'm thinking that it might also be a CD-R, but if one of you guys would like to play guinea pig so we know for sure ....

Thanks, Linda! I'll go with the Amazon version and write South's name myself. :-)

My copy of Soultime!, ordered from Southside's online store, just arrived and it is a real pressed silver disc, not a CD-R.

The inner ring on the playable side reads "C15071043 CV-JUK-1890 SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY - SOULTIME", and also has an engraved barcode.

I got mine from Amazon...$9.99 delivered and I can't tell if it's a CD-R or not. It doesn't have the typical CD-R blue-green underside. I just saw them for the umpteenth time in August and they were awesome as always. This album is pretty good too! Oh, the amazon version came in a jewel case for those who care.

My copy from southsidejohnny.com came in a dual-fold cardboard sleeve, with the disc enclosed in one side and a booklet with lyrics/credits in the other side. All told, it came out to around $24 including shipping. If I had waited I could have gotten it for less than half that from Amazon, although I would have had to pay state sales tax, though the Prime shipping would have been free. Oh well, at least the music is good! And, I can delude myself that by ordering direct, the artist will receive more money.

Steve, did the Amazon version come with the lyrics booklet?

That's my only gripe about the Amazon copy...bare bones booklet with only song titles and times. No credits and no lyrics.

The plot thickens -- Amazon now has a bare-bones pre-order listing for Soultime!, perhaps the general release of a real aluminum CD (there's no mention of it being a CD-R), again at half the price of buying it direct from Southside's website:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B016PUL854/?tag=imwan-20

Let's watch this and see what it turns out to be.

Got my copy from Linda's new listing today -- pressed CD in an oversized foldout card sleeve.
