Rhino To Release 10CD Lou Reed Set, The Sire Years – Complete Albums Box
Aside from the cool news that Loaded, the Velvet Underground classic would be receiving a large dose of love, it always amazed me that the labels never went into their Lou Reed holdings after he passed away. I always thought that there would be some kind of love applied to not only the obvious – vis-à-vis Transformer, maybe even, Rock and Roll Animal – but to all of the brilliant Lou Reed solo library. I’m not a fan of much after The Bells, but still, all of his albums mean something to one person or another. I LOVE Sally Can’t Dance, and most people do not.
It never happened. We never got a re-visitation of any Lou Reed albums. I’m still saddened over this fact, even ashamed.
Nevertheless, Warner Brothers has assembled a complete Sire Years collection to be spread over ten CDs. I’ve only received notification on this today. Other than the assumption that the seven Sire albums (New York – 1989, Songs for Drella – 1990, Magic And Loss – 1992, Set The Twilight Reeling – 1996, Perfect Night – Live In London – 1998, Ecstasy – 2000, The Raven – 2003) will be included. I’m not sure what the remaining three CDs will be.
In 2014, Rhino released The Sire Years: The Solo Collection with six CDs. This year, Rhino will release the new set, The Sire Years – Complete Albums Box on October 30. More on this when I get better information.

We're all going to be boxed in the way these boxes are coming out. Sadly my CD shopping has stalled recently on Amazon because of our Australia dollar crashing 20%

Lou Reed is someone I've contemplated delving into (I've never owned a Lou Reed album), but I feel that getting a complete albums box for him might be a mistake. I think with him I might try one of his better albums (some ICErs here have made recommendations), but I feel uneasy buying a box like this.

A box set is overkill for a beginner. I think the best starting points are Transformer (1972) and New York (1989).
Rock N Roll Animal (1974) is a great live album which you'd probably enjoy, with the caveat that it actually features more Velvet Underground songs than Reed solo material.

If WB includes the 2 CD version of The Raven that would take care of 8 discs. If they then toss in the single disc version which edited out the spoken-word tracks, that would be 9 discs, leaving a 10th disc for rarities, maybe?
Chris, I'd recommend The Blue Mask and Street Hassle as well as what Tricky Kid mentioned.
I love New York, but a lot of it is topical and tied to what was going on in New York and the world at that specific time. And with Lou, for that matter. As a result, some of the lyrics may seem a bit dated, but they're still good.

I've never understood why "Growing Up in Public" is not widely considered a masterpiece. I think it is a fabulous piece of work and one of his very best albums. I didn't like much after "The Blue Mask" except "Songs for Drella" and "New York."

Love seeing an appreciation for Growing Up in Public, which is one of my favorite Lou albums.

I'm not familiar with these records, aside from New York. I love that album. Are the others just as good?
No, they aren't but Ecstacy is very, very good. Magic and Loss is a very good album with its theme being death and loss. The live albums are decent, one acoustic and one electric (neither as good as Rock n Roll Animal). Songs for Drella is ok and The Raven is a cd I've listened to once. Just my two cents.
