The album has been mixed from the original studio masters by Steven Wilson with input from Andy Partridge, & is fully approved by XTC. The CD features a completely new stereo album mix, while the Blu-ray features a wealth of content, continuing the “ virtual box set on a single disc” concept of the first 2 releases in the series.

– a new stereo album mix in 24bit/96khz LPCM audio
– instrumental versions of all new stereo mixes in 24bit/96khz LPCM audio
– a flat transfer of the original stereo album mix in 24bit/96khz LPCM audio
– 2 separate sets of demo & work tape sessions showing the evolution of the album & associated recordings
– 1 set of pre-recording rehearsals, promos & ID links for radio stations & record companies
– a collection of single mixes & XTC’s version of Captain Beefheart’s ‘Ella Guru’
– promo films for “The Mayor of Simpleton” (3 versions), “King for a Day” & “The Road to Oranges & Lemons” rarely seen home-made film by the band explaining the album (& themselves!) to Geffen Records USA.

From slicingupeyeballs.com:

By all appearances, XTC’s 1989 album Oranges and Lemons is next up in the band’s current series of audiophile reissues, as bandleader Andy Partridge has been tweeting in recent weeks about work on the 5.1 Surround mix, including an attempt today at Abbey Road Studios to transfer the baked album tapes that were found “in a very bad way.”

Partridge initiated the new XTC reissue series last year with a new edition of 1992′s Nonsuch, followed, this past September, by a reissue of 1979′s Drums and Wires. In both cases, the reissues (on CD and Blu-ray) came with new 5.1 Surround and stereo mixes by Porcupine Tree frontman Steven Wilson, plus various bonus tracks, including B-sides and demos.

On Nov. 14, Partridge began tweeting about Oranges and Lemons, saying he’d just been told the multi-track tapes are “in a very bad way.” He followed that with, “Fingers and eyes crossed, they are going to ‘bake’ them and see what can be done. Then there’s the ones covered in mould {not Moulding}.”

Last week, Partridge noted that he was sorting and mixing demos by himself and Colin Moulding for the reissue. Then, this morning, he tweeted: “Today Abbey Road are trying a transfer of all baked ORANGES AND LEMONS tapes. Here’s hoping that all goes well and nothing is ruined.”

I hope this turns out well. Oranges and Lemons is probably my favorite XTC album. So many great songs. What a shame about the sad shape of the tapes, though. I know there has been a serious effort over the last couple of decades to preserve old movies. Maybe music should have a similar crusade.

Very excited about this. I knew a few XTC tunes in the mid-'80s but didn't become a fan until I got Oranges & Lemons, which I still consider my favorite XTC album. The timing of this thread is perfect, as I'm listening to the surround sound bonus tracks on the Drums & Wires Blu-ray as I type this.

Huge XTC fan. This album always had kind of a tinny, bright sound to me (LP and CD). May have to jump on this just for better sound quality.

"OOH OOH" - Arnold Horschack

This is great news. One of my favorite XTC albums, right up there with Nonsuch.....

If Wilson does as good a job on this as Nonsuch...(of COURSE he will), then this will be excellent....

And after this, English Settlement please.... :yay:

Hmm... Well I know that at under £25 this is going to be a bargain anyway, but I never imagined that Burning Shed would be the least expensive option  .
