This special presentation of Jimi Hendrix: Electric Church presents the legendary guitarist in full flight at the 1970 Atlanta Pop Festival before the largest US audience of his career.

This critically acclaimed film combines color, 16mm multi-camera footage of Hendrix's unforgettable July 4, 1970 concert in its original performance sequence together with a new documentary that traces his journey to the festival amidst the dark shadow of civil rights unrest, the unrelenting toll of the Vietnam War and a burgeoning festival culture that drew together young people across the country who were inspired by the Woodstock festival.

The film details Hendrix's integral role in drawing nearly 500,000 people to his Electric Church- a dusty, scorching hot pecan orchard in Byron, Georgia some 100 miles south of Atlanta. Together with Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Billy Cox, Jimi skillfully blended favorites such as "Purple Haze," "All Along The Watchtower," and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" with confident renditions of new songs such as "Freedom" and "Straight Ahead" that had not yet been released on album. As a colorful fireworks display stretched overhead across the night sky, Jimi performed the "Star Spangled Banner" to the wild delight of the massive audience.

The performance footage of the Experience has been carefully restored from the original negative in high definition. The audio soundtrack includes stereo and 5.1 surround sound mixes by Eddie Kramer directly from the original master tapes.

The expanded DVD and Blu-ray feature three songs not seen in the television broadcast. This includes, "Red House," "Freedom" and a special presentation of "Room Full Of Mirrors" that features all of the existing performance footage combined with never before seen photographs of the Atlanta performance.

amazon says this is a legacy release (no mention of 'experience hendrix), somehow though, i think janie and her dad are involved too.

"Janie and her dad"? Are you talking about her stepfather Al Hendrix (Jimi's dad)? He's been dead since 2002.

The courts gave it all to Janie Hendrix, who is not a blood relative. Unless something has changed in the last couple years, Jimi's 1 real brother, Leon is is 100% cut out.

I've posted before that I did meet Al twice in the late 90's. He seemed like a nice man.

Technically, it's Jimi's dad Al who gave it all to Janie (and cut out Leon). Unless you accept the premise that Al was coerced by Janie and/or not in his right mind when he signed his will. I don't know enough to have an opinion on that point, but I do know Leon lost a legal challenge making that claim. I do think it's too bad though... certainly it seems more likely Jimi would have wanted his fortune to go to his brother, rather than to a stepsister he didn't even know. I guess the moral of the story is that if you're a wealthy rock star and occasionally indulge in substances, you should always prepare a will.

I think you're right. My vague memory is that at the time Leon had a drug problem; thus Al's decision. Living in the same area, I have not heard good things about Janie, either.
