Description
“I believe you should allow the songs to be boss, and the songs were saying, ‘You need to make a rock record.’”
—Lloyd Cole

It’s been 30 years since Lloyd Cole appeared on the radar of music fans with his band, The Commotions, and their Gold-selling debut, Rattlesnakes. Cole has kept busy, releasing solo albums since 1990, and Omnivore Recordings is proud to present his latest, Standards.

Originally released in 2013, Standards was only available overseas. Omnivore is correcting that by offering the title here on CD and LP (with download card). To make the LP even more special, the first pressing will be available on clear vinyl, with black to follow.

Recruiting band members from his self-titled debut—including drummer Fred Maher and Matthew Sweet on bass, as well as former Commotion Blair Cowan on keyboards—Standards features 10 Cole-penned originals, plus a cover of John Hartford’s “California Earthquake.”

Recorded in Los Angeles, Easthampton, and New York, Standards is prime Lloyd Cole. With a nod to the past, but always an eye toward the future, Standards will take its place among Cole’s best work.

Tracklist
1. California Earthquake
2. Women's Studies
3. Period Piece
4. Myrtle Ad Rose
5. No Truck
6. Blue Like Mars
7. Opposites Day
8. Silver Lake
9. It's Late
10. Kids Today
11. Diminished Ex

This is a terrific record. Lloyd's best in many years (probably since Negatives). He recorded it with a band, rather than on his own, and it really shows. It's also getting great reviews. I hope this is a successful record because LC is a great writer who doesn't nearly get the credit he deserves.

My daughter and I saw Lloyd perform live last month, and have been listening to this disc quite a bit lately. It's really a strong album, and has not left my car since the show. Particularly enjoy the songs "Women's Studies" (one of the catchiest tunes he's written in a long time), and "Blue Like Mars", but the whole album is wonderful. I was fortunate to snag a copy of the Deluxe Edition directly from Lloyd's website, it was only offered to participants in the album's Kickstarter campaign.

Lloyd Cole's album "Standards" was finally released domestically by Omnivore, on October 14, 2014.

Highly recommended, for anyone still on the fence.

I need to pull this one out again. I've been focused on the Commotions box that just came out. I just got back from 2 weeks on the Maine coast and LC played a show in Portland while I was there (about 20 minutes away). Sadly, I couldn't drag Mrs. Smiff from the beach long enough to catch the show.
