No Blue Money on this one, either. It's not on any of his comps. He must not like the song, though a lot of his fans do.

There's a few omissions (always are with these supposed "essential" comps), but this one is pretty good.

Overall I agree this one is pretty good. Some of his comps get rather random. That said, some great later years songs are omitted for some decent but hardly essential ones.

How strange that this is a Sony/BMG/Legacy release. Wasn't the vast majority of his work on Warner Bros., Mercury and Polydor, none of which are in the Sony/BMG family?

Actually I was thinking the same thing. The only thing I ever saw under Sony was his very early work. Does Sony own his catalog now? Something that occurred to me is that Vic Anesini masters a lot
of the Essential discs (and other Sony stuff) so if he does this set, that would be very nice to hear...

Same thought for me too. If Sony acquired his catalog, it's news to me. WB just did that deluxe edition of Moondance a couple years ago,

I just looked up his recent new release - the duets album and it's an "Exile" RCA release so, at minimum, Sony is his current home.

as only a casual fan of Van Morrison,
but someone who certainly recognizes his valuable contributions to music;
i'd like someone more knowledgeable about his catalog to constructively comment
about the differences between the 3CD set "Still On Top..." (which i own) and this new "Essential" 2CD set.

Essential appears to be 'mostly' in chronological order, 22 cuts appear on the 3 CD Still On Top, 14 cuts don't plus 1 live version instead of a studio version:

Of these 15 cuts, 1 is from the Bang era, 8 from the Warner Bros era, and 6 post Warner Bros. Don't know when the 2 live cuts were actually recorded...

There was a story on Rolling Stone today that there'll be some deluxe Van CDs coming at some point.

Answering my own question-- picked this up today and it is, in fact, mastered by Vic Anesini.

Vic has done a lot of the Essential sets it seems lately. The more recent ones I have that he did, sound great.
