Neil Young Recording New Album With Willie Nelson's Sons

Neil Young sat down with Rolling Stone Executive Editor Nathan Brackett at the International Consumer Electronics Show on Wednesday to discuss the long-awaited rollout of his Pono music player, but he also shared details of his next LP. "I'm working on another album now that I'm going to do be doing with Willie Nelson's sons," he said, jokingly suggesting he would title it The Monsanto Years after the agriculture company he's been railing against for years. "It's an upbeat review of the situation."

Young was less sure about his other future plans. "I don't know much about the future," he said. "I want to [focus on Pono] and I want to continue playing music. Those two things should keep me pretty busy. I have some film editing and things to do on the side. I'll probably be writing some more books. I want to keep doing what I do. I'd like to continue doing it for a long time."

Young has no tour dates on the books right now other than an appearance at the pre-Grammy MusiCares tribute to Bob Dylan on February 6th in Los Angeles. "I did a tour last year called Honor the Treaties that went across Canada to try and help the aboriginal first nations tribes enforce their treaty rights in the constitution of Canada," he said. "If I do anything this year, I might do that again in a bigger way. At first it succeeded, but it succeeded more than the artists I was trying to get thought it would. If I do that again maybe it'll get more artists. At this point, it's interesting to try and do something meaningful and try and make some sort of a difference because I've attained a certain level that I feel a responsibility to use for positive things rather than just getting my name in People magazine or something."

The majority of the interview was devoted to Pono. The website launched this week and the player began selling for $300. "This is all about making music sound as good as it can," he said. "Music is about having a good time feeling in your soul, whether it makes you laugh or it makes you cry. The mission of Pono is to make you feel as much as you can. We're sharing all of our technology with anyone that wants to make anything. Any manufacturer that wants to make this kind of quality, we'll show you how to do it."

Despite his busy schedule, Young found time to release two albums last year, tour Europe with Crazy Horse and play a series of solo acoustic dates across America. He also played with Lukas and Micah Nelson, two highly accomplished guitarists, at Farm Aid, the Harvest the Hope benefit and the Bridge School Benefit, but hadn't previous that indicated he had any intention of cutting new material with the duo.

Watch the rest of the new interview right here to hear Young talk in tremendous depth about Pono.

Neil Young Readies New Album, Tour With Willie Nelson's Sons
The rocker takes on GMO-producing chemical company Monsanto on latest LP and Rebel Content tour
By Daniel Kreps April 20, 2015

Neil Young and Promise of the Real, a band featuring Willie Nelson's sons Lukas and Micah, will hit the road this summer in support of their upcoming album together, The Monsanto Years. Young's new LP will reportedly arrive on June 16th according to a press release sent to promoters, while the Rebel Content Tour itself will kick off July 5th at Milwaukee's Summerfest.

For years, Young has railed against Monsanto, the chemical company specializing in genetically modified seeds. In January, Young revealed that he was working on an album called The Monsanto Years, but the rocker appeared to be joking about the title at the time. "I'm working on another album now that I'm going to be doing with Willie Nelson's sons," Young said. "It's an upbeat review of the situation."

At a surprise concert April 16th at San Luis Obispo, California's SLO Brewing Co., Young and Promise of the Real debuted 11 new tracks that might appear on their joint LP. Those songs boasted protest-minded titles like "Monsanto Years," "Rock Starbucks," "Seeds" and "Too Big to Fail," fan site Sugar Mountain reports. Young had previously teamed with the Nelson brothers at Farm Aid and the Bridge School Benefit.

According to the Burlington Free Press, Young's Rebel Content tour will feature the rocker's first ever concert in Vermont. The newspaper speculates that Young is rewarding the Green Mountain State for their stance on genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. Vermont passed a law requiring companies to list whether their food contained GMOs, and in a note to fans, Young called for a boycott of Starbucks for their part in the effort "to sue Vermont, and stop accurate food labeling." The coffee giant later clarified that they were not involved in the lawsuit against Vermont.

Neil Young Tour Dates

July 5 - Milwaukee, WI @ Summerfest
July 8 & 9 - Denver, CO @ Red Rocks
July 11 - Lincoln, NE @ Pinnacle Bank Arena
July 13 - Cincinnati, OH @ Riverbend Music Center
July 14 - Clarkston, MI @ DTE Energy Music Theatre

July 19 - Essex Junction, VT @ Champlain Valley Expo
July 21 - Wantagh, NY @ Jones Beach

Nothing like a pissed off Neil Young concert.

Hope it isn't too country. One thing I will say about NY, is that he's a bigger musical chameleon than even Bowie, & one rarely knows what to expect.

You gotta love him. He does more in one year than most in five.

I had a good listen to the whole album yesterday, sadly I have to say at this stage it's terrible. Not one of Neil's proudest moments for sure.
The entire allbum is about Monsanto and reminds me if Living With War but much worse sadly.

Dittos on the thanks. If it's that bad, it'll be in my insomnia cure pile of CDs. "Living With War" is already there

I really don't mind Living With War. I don't love it, but imo it's better then Reactor, Trans, Everybody's Rockin', Old Ways, Mirrorball, Americana & A Letter Home.

A Letter Home, Trans, Reactor and Americana are all pretty bad. I like Everybody's Rockin, Old Ways and Mirror Ball.

neil young can be very hit and miss......some albums a re just great, almost perfect (after the goldrush and harvest are basically perfect) and some can be pretty bad , (greendale comes to mind quickly and a letter home is putrid, literally putrid), but as a lifelong neil young fan you just get used to it i guess.

i never buy a new neil young album with high expectations......never.

And each person likes different ones. I usually like the ones the critics hate & vice versa. As an example I really like Greendale. Though to understand it, you've got to also watch either the full concert dvd where NY tells the backing story between songs, or watch the film.

I like it. It's true it's in the topical category, like Living With War. That means it'll alienate some listeners right away. It also means it won't age well. Like LWW, I don't think it's meant to. It's comparable to an op-ed piece in a newspaper/blog. It's of its time.

I still listen to LWW. Some of the songs still a relevant. Some are not. That's what'll happen with The Monsanto Years.

By the way, while the topicality is like LWW, the music isn't. It's closer to a country rock/Americana feel. Not country, though. Not at all.
