Bannings: If you're not nice
Charles Pelto, publisher of Classic Comics Press, posted this message on Facebook:

Quote:
I've just heard the news that Leonard Starr has passed away. I am deeply saddened by this loss. Leonard was one of the finest men I have ever had the pleasure to have met, and it's been an honor not only to know Leonard and call him my friend, but to be able to publish his masterpiece - Mary Perkins On Stage. I will miss the man dearly. Godspeed Leonard, and thanks for letting me be a part of your life.

Starr was 89 years old.

So he was already 57 or 58 when he wrote the first four episodes of Thundercats, and thus set the tone for a huge component of my childhood.

This guy was awesome. RIP

I've been enjoying Mary Perkins almost every day (I read a week's worth in the morning). It's been way better than I was even expecting -- art and writing is beautiful.

I recommend you guys check it out, along with Rip Kirby.

He brought back Little Orphan Annie from the limbo of repeats:

Alas. She is gone again, and so is Leonard.

I mean guys like Leonard Starr and Stan Drake are about the only reasons I can draw a decent looking woman.

Has anyone, other than myself, read Starr and Drake's Kelly Green series? They are a series of graphic novels they did for Europe in the 80s. I have three of them. They're murder mysteries that even my wife enjoyed. Starr wrote and Drake drew. All five stories are finally going to be collected and published this December.

I picked up at least one Kelly Green books about 30 years ago.
Don't remember much about it, though.

Yeah, a cover something like that. Seem to recall some rather sexy scenes.

I know it sounds trite compared to the stuff he did for more adult readers, but his "Thundercats" episodes really are well written. When I bought the DVDs as an adult to rediscover the show, I found that his episodes were the most clever/witty, and the ones that most respected the intelligence of the show's (admittedly very young) readership.

I think, of the 130 episodes that exist, Starr wrote approximately twenty. They're the best ones.

He's also interviewed briefly for a little documentary feature in the 2nd box set, which is neat.
