Description
Unfairly dubbed 'the British Dylan' when he exploded onto the UK scene in 1965, Donovan Leitch was a singularly wide-eyed optimist who introduced such quintessentially '60s concepts as Flower Power and Transcendental Meditation to his friends The Beatles and to pop culture in general. Retrospective celebrates Donovan's 50 years of creating music tinged with mystical beauty and idealistic wonder. All the tracks on this 2 CD anthology were selected by Donovan, and include his classics 'Sunshine Superman', 'The Hurdy Gurdy Man', 'Jenifer Juniper' and 'Mellow Yellow', along with 25 other hits and album tracks and the brand new track 'One English Summer'.

Donovan may have had more compilations over the years than any popular artist not named Elvis Presley. However, this track list looks superb, surprisingly close to what my personal 2 disc comp of Donovan would look like. Off the top of my head, the only one of my favorite Donovan tracks that isn't here is "Where Is She" from Barabajagal, and that's getting pretty obscure. The hits and most well-known songs are on disc 1, and disc 2 is a very well-chosen collection of some of his very best album tracks, just the kind of material that shows how much more there is to his 60's recordings than the hits -- nice job, Mr. Leitch. This would be a great place for a beginner to start. The only downside is the new track, which sounds like a real disappointment.

Looks nice, but for me it's definitely redundant.

I was excited a few years back when I got the expanded 2 disc version of my fav Donovan album In Concert for well under $10.

Other then In Concert, Donovan was mostly a singles artist for me (though there were a lot of them!)

I've discovered some nice album tracks on all of his 60's and early 70's releases. They're stronger than I expected them to be, because I used to think of him as a singles artist, too. I think Sunshine Superman is a pretty consistent album all the way through.

I love that special 2CD stereo/mono import version of Sunshine Superman that came out a few years ago, as well as the 2CD version of In Concert already mentioned. I guess there's no chance of a stereo version of Mellow Yellow. The oft-overlooked album HMS Donovan, viewed as a childrens' album, is really great, similar to A Gift From a Flower to a Garden.

Sunshine Superman is his best by a long way

That new stereo version of Sunshine Superman is fantastic.

As I mentioned above, the 2 disc UK edition of In Concert on EMI is my favorite non-comp.
