Balls To The Wall/Saving A Life

Image

Description
Originally released at the end of 1983, “Balls To the Wall” is the fifth album by the influential German heavy metal band Accept.

Taking much of their inspiration from the likes of fellow German hard rock the Scorpions, as well as a debt to UK metal legends Judas Priest, Accept were fronted by the inimitable Udo Dirkschneider on vocals, backed by lead guitar heroes Wolf Hoffmann and Herman Frank.

Controversial at the time for its cover and some of the album’s themes, it was also their greatest commercial success, reaching number 75 in the US Billboard Hot 100. “Balls To The Wall” received gold status in the US, partly off the back of the heavy rotation the title track’s video received on MTV.

The album is now backed by the bonus CD “Staying A Life”, a live album recorded at the Festival Hall, Osaka, Japan on 18th September 1985. As well as storming live versions of key tracks from “Balls To The Wall”, it features many Accept classics including ‘Breaker’, ‘Princess Of The Dawn’, ‘Restless And Wild’, ‘Son Of A Bitch’ and ‘Fast As A Shark’.

An expanded booklet features new liner notes from Classic Rock and Metal Hammer’s Malcolm Dome, commissioned for this release.

Metal Heart/Kaizoku-Ban

Image

Description
“Metal Heart”, Accept’s sixth studio album, was their second major label release after 1983’s “Balls to The Wall”. Their 1985 record found the legendary and highly influential German heavy metal band go in a slightly more US radio-friendly than their previous releases, particularly on the single ‘Midnight Mover’.

This edition now includes the Japanese live mini-album “Kaizoku-Ban” in its entirety, recorded in Nagoya, Japan, on September 19, 1985 on the Japanese leg of the band’s Metal Heart world tour. “Kaizoku-Ban” features ‘Metal Heart’, ‘Screaming For A Love-Bite’ and ‘Up To The Limit’ from “Metal Heart” and ‘Head Over Heels’, ‘Love Child’ and ‘Living For Tonite’ from their previous long-player, “Balls to The Wall”.

The album was their first to be produced by famed German producer Dieter Dirks, best known for his work with fellow Teutonic rockers, the Scorpions.

This varied album strays into jazz territory on ‘Teach Us To Survive’ and even classical themes, with parts of Tchaikovsky’s ‘Slavonic March’ and Beethoven’s ‘Für Elise’ featured during the title track.

The 16 page booklet features liner notes from Metal Hammer and Classic Rock’s Malcolm Dome based on a new interview with the band’s Wolf Hoffman.

Objection Overruled

Image

Description
After conquering the rock world with their own teutonic brand of heavy metal in the 1980s with “Balls To The Wall” (1983) and “Metal Heart” (1985), Accept parted ways with original singer and frontman Udo Dirkschneider following the release of 1986’s “Russian Roulette”. Although a sound and commercially propulsed effort, 1989’s “Eat The Heat” featuring David Reece on vocals was not what Accept’s fans had come to expect, whilst their former singer followed a more metal direction with his eponymously named U.D.O. After the release of “Staying A Life”, a 1985 live archive recording featuring their former singer, a reunion was inevitable.

Scaled down to Udo Dirkschneider on vocals, Wolf Hoffmann on guitar, Peter Baltes on bass guitar and Stefan Kaufmann on drums, 1993’s “Objection Overruled” is certainly a return to form for these German metal legends.

Featuring 11 tracks, it includes the singles ‘I Don’t Wanna Be Like You’, ‘All or Nothing’ and the self-explanatory ‘Slaves To Metal’, written and produced by the band in conjunction with long term collaborator Deaffy.

With expanded artwork, and liner notes by Malcolm Dome based on new interviews with the band, “Objection Overruled” is a worthy addition to Accept’s HNE catalogue. Also available are “Balls To The Wall” (HNECD018D), “Metal Heart” (HNECD022), “Russian Roulette” (HNECD029) and ‘Eat The Heat” (HNECD030), all of which are available with bonus content. Also available is the double live “ALL AREAS – WORLDWIDE LIVE” (HNECD040D).

Tracklist
1. Objection Overruled
2. I Don't Wanna Be Like You
3. Protectors of Terror
4. Slaves to Metal
5. All Or Nothing
6. Bulletproof
7. Amamos La Vida
8. Sick, Dirty and Mean
9. Donation
10. Just By My Own
11. This One's for You

Russian Roulette

Image

Description
The last Accept LP to feature Udo Dirkschneider, until his return in 1993, the album finds Accept returning to darker tones and a heavier sound to that of the more commercially orientated previous record, Metal Heart. The artwork and themes of the record reflects an era when the cold war still at its height, and the fall of the Berlin wall still more than three years away. This remastered version features 3 live bonus tracks recorded on their 1985 Japanese tour; Burning, Head Over Heels and Neon Nights.

Tracklist
1. T.V. War
2. Monsterman
3. Russian Roulette
4. It's Hard To Find A Way
5. Aiming High
6. Heaven Is Hell
7. Another Second To Be
8. Walking In The Shadow
9. Man Enough To Cry
10. Stand Tight
[Bonus Tracks - Live 1985, From Live In Japan '85]
11. Neon Nights
12. Burning
13. Head Over Heels

Eat The Heat

Image

Description
Although they can trace their origins back to the late 60's, these German heavy metal pioneers didnt release an album until 1979's self-titled debut. Four year later they finally found a place on the international stage and major label success with 1983's controversial Balls To The Wall, which was followed up by the more radio-friendly Metal Heart in 1985. Both are available as HNE expanded editions. Originally led by the seemingly irreplaceable Udo Dirkschneider, the singer left for a solo career as UDO following 1986's Russian Roulette.

Replacing Udo with the previously unknown David Reece, lead guitarist Wolf Hoffmann, bassist Peter Baltes and drummer Stefan Kaufmann produced Eat The Heat in 1989, their first LP without Udo. Now presented with a 16 page booklet featuring an in-depth essay about the album from Classic Rock and Metal Hammers Malcolm Dome, based on new interviews with the band, this remastered CD also includes the non-album 12 single remix of Generation Clash as a bonus track.

Tracklist
1. X - T
2. Generation Clash
3. Chain Reaction
4. Love Sensation
5. Turn The Wheel
6. Hellhammer
7. Prisoner
8. I Can't Believe In You
9. Mistreated
10. Stand 4 What U R
11. Break The Ice
12. D - Train
13. Generation Clash (Single Version)

I love this band and was unaware of all of these remasters.

I didn't check to see if Amazon has them listed or not. The Hear No Evil/Cherry Red site is awful to navigate.

This original post could be cleaned up a bit, if anyone else even cares that is.

It's all filled in now, images and links and everything.

Cherry Red's site is not very accurate about their own release dates either, or even tracklists and descriptions. These remasters didn't all come out last month -- two are from 2013 and another three are from 2014, including the double live album which was mentioned in one of the above remasters' descriptions.

Pass, all the original CDs of these sound pretty good.

Interesting that "Kaizoku-Ban" is bonus tracks on one title and "Staying a Life" is a bonus disc for another title since "Kaizoku-Ban" is an edited version of "Staying a Life."

Did they ever issue "Balls To the Wall" properly on compact disc in the USA? When it was first issued it was combined with "Restless and Wild" and then three or four songs deleted to fit both albums on one CD. That had to be one of the worst compact disc releases in the history of the format. It was a no-brainer to skip that one and buy the expensive imports instead. Fot the Accept fan that doesn't have the complete "Balls To the Wall" in the collection, this combo of "Balls To the Wall" + "Staying a Life" looks like a great purchase providing the mastering is at least OK.

Breaker
Restless and Wild
Balls to the Wall
Metal Heart

Those four in particular, must-haves for any metal collection.

Balls to the Wall was remastered by Epic/Legacy with bonus cuts in the 2000's sometime I believe.

I will be getting these as I own none on CD and I believe Andy Pearce (or Matt Wortham) handled the mastering.

If only Restless and Wild (one of the best Metal albums ever made) was properly done.

When I first heard "Balls To The Wall," I thought it was AC/DC.

More like GayC/DC

(actually, there is a local band called GayC/DC so I should credit them)
