I'm definitely in for this one unless it's a compilation of rarities from the band's two box sets.

Musictap.com

The Band, like The Beatles, or The Rolling Stones, need little to no introduction. Although less people have heard of The Band as opposed to many of the other bands that emerged from the same period, their fame is still legendary.

The Band famously ended their career, albeit on a high note, with their legendary The Last Waltz extravaganza. It may not have been to all the band members’ liking but it happened nevertheless. It’s been meticulously chronicled by the popular film of the same name, and several versions of the phenomenal soundtrack.

From a studio point, The Band ended with Islands, a collection of previously unreleased songs that Robbie Robertson has called “their Odds And Sods (The Who collection of unreleased tracks)”. To this day, I still listen to Islands quite frequently.

On May 12, Capitol Records will release a digital version (for now) of Capitol Rarities 1968-1977 that contain rarities from The Band. Since the date is way out there, I’m betting that we might see a CD version of this. Right now, there is no other word on content, or anything else that this might contain. If this has already been released, then I’m not seeing it. Therefore, I thought it worthy to make mention of.

Here’s hoping that we get something classic for our libraries! Updates as they come.

This is some of the worst writing I have ever seen. It reads like one of those infamously bad translations from Chinese.

You ain't kidding. Headache inducing!

And no need for Larry to apologize for quoting that monstrosity. Better to share the information, but I am guessing this will just be a digital storehouse of the rarities previously released across the remastered CDs and elsewhere. I would love to be wrong, though!

So with the multiple box sets released over the years we now have unreleased tracks coming out. Am I getting this right? :-o

Could there be a batch of Basement Tapes with just the Band without Dylan - or perhaps more of what they recorded for the double lp back in the mid-70's?

I'm in for anything from a group whose "fame is legendary."

A box set featuring pre-Dylan recordings through non-Dylan Basement recordings has been in the planning stages for over a decade (http://theband.hiof.no/albums/from_baco ... t_day.html). Hopes are that with the release of the Basement Tapes box, it will finally see release soon.

At any rate, Basement recordings would be outside the purview of a release covering 1968-77. If I had to guess, I would bet this new release is simply some sort of compilation of bonus tracks from the 2000 reissues and/or tracks from the Musical History box set. I think the vault has pretty well been scraped clean, and I can't imagine there's much of anything that's unreleased.

That box set that you mention Jason is a joke. At one point, its release was supposed to be imminent. It was mentioned on that website for years. I don't think that the information is there anymore. I don't know if it was ever something that was supposed to come or if it was someone's idea of a joke.

It wasn't a joke, at least not in the literal sense. You are correct that it's been said to be due for imminent release for the past ten years at least, and if I recall correctly there used to be a tracklist up at the band.hiof site. The label it's supposed to be released on (Other People's Music) is owned by Jan Haust, the guy who purchased Garth Hudson's original basement tape reels and then made them available for the recent Bootleg Series release of the complete Basement Tapes. There is some speculation that legal issues have prevented the release, but that Haust's cooperation with Sony regarding providing the Bootleg Series release will break the logjam and get the Band box set finally released too. We'll see.

Yeah, I meant that it was a joke because it had been on that site for so many years with nothing coming of it.

Here's a follow-up to an album that at least I had forgotten about.

Capitol Rarities 1968-1977 By The Band Is In Current Download Release

Posted In: Release Pieces, TAPSheet, Updates, USTo avoid being headache inducing, I’m just releasing a bit of info regarding this digital-only, Capitol Rarities 1968-1977 with 33 collected rarities from the vaults of The Band. This downloadable content has indeed been released on May 12, as previously stated.

With the high cost of the individual tracks, I’m guessing that Capitol will let this play out, see what they can get monetarily, and then release the set as a CD. Cross your fingers!

Looks like I was right... this appears to be nothing more than a compilation of the bonus tracks from the 2000-01 reissues. What is the point of that? Are the reissues out of print?

I don't think so. If they'd sold this as a regular CD at the time of the reissues, I probably would have bought it. I think that I'll pass this time around though.

Based on the sound samples on amazon, it sounds like they haven't even bothered to upgrade "Don't Do It" for this collection, which is an appalling oversight. For those who don't know: when they put together the 2001 reissue of Cahoots, they were not able to locate the master tape for the studio version of "Don't Do It" and were forced to use a very low quality source (it sounds like it's a cassette). Subsequent to that release, the master was located, and it was used on the A Musical History box set. But (again, based on the sound sample) this new release appears to contain the older, low-quality source for the song. That's pretty unforgivable, and demonstrates that no thought or effort was put into this release. They clearly just compiled all the bonus tracks from the old CDs and threw them together.

so the loyal "band" fans who bought all the reissues could have kept their original CD's and just bought this.........had they known it was coming out.

let the fleecing of fans of older bands go on and on and on and on..

sickening, seriously.

Yes, if only the loyal Band fans knew they could buy the bonus tracks on their own if they just waited 14 or 15 years!

I'm sure this was the evil plan all along.

Isn't everything that gets released a cash grab?

I mean, I'm pretty sure nobody releases an album thinking, "Man, I hope this thing doesn't make any money!"
