Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow Show from 1979 Gets Released

When Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow released Down to Earth in 1979, it marked a highpoint in the band’s history.

The album, their fourth studio release, contained “Since You Been Gone,” the Russ Ballard–penned song that would go on to become Rainbow’s first hit single, reaching Number Six in the U.K. Singles Chart and becoming a staple of FM radio in the United States.

The subsequent tour was legendary, with a set list that featured fan favorites like “Long Live Rock ’N’ Roll” and “Man on the Silver Mountain,” plus a groundbreaking light show. In addition to Blackmore, the band featured Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover, keyboardist Don Airey, drummer Cozy Powell and singer Graham Bonnett.

Now a historic gig from the Denver stop on that tour has been released. Denver 1979 is a double-LP set that serves up seven tracks, including “Eyes of the World,” “Love’s No Friend,” “Since You Been Gone,” “All Night Long,” “Lost in Hollywood,” “Man on the Silver Mountain,” and “Long Live Rock ’N’ Roll.”

Released by Purple Pyramid Records, Denver 1979 is pressed on red, green and blue vinyl and presented with a holographic gatefold foil jacket. The album is available to purchase via Cleopatra, and a digital version is available through iTunes.

Purple Pyramid will also release a deluxe three-CD box set on August 21 that features the Denver show along with gigs recorded in Long Island and Chicago on the tour. The package will include a color button badge, a fabric patch, a Ritchie Blackmore signature guitar pick and a bottle opener/keychain.

Also due around that time is a CD box set of three shows from that tour, including this Denver show.

I will be pleasantly shocked if the sound quality of these shows on CD is any good.

This 1979 show is a common boot from FM broadcast.

The "cover art" is garbage and is clearly a Blackmore photo from Deep Purple days in 1972. Major red flag.

The Denver show out now is only on vinyl, the other release will be 3 CDs, but I do not trust this in any way, and as a Rainbow fanatic of extreme nature, I have to say that Purple Pyramid/Cleopatra are putting out dubious profuct at best.

There were several shows from FM broadcast on this tour and the current official box set A Light in the Black has a few cuts of the King Biscuit show from NY in 1979 that are very good but of a hissy nature with some uneven balance from the mix, but it is professional.

I'd hope that these are at least of that quality but the band has nothing to do with this and the cover art for Denver 1979 is something to be wary about. Also, the show seems incomplete.

Track list:

SIDE A
Eyes Of The World
Love s No Friend

SIDE B
Since You Been Gone
All Night Long

SIDE C

That's what the last paragraph says! :ohyes:

I'll defer to Pete's knowledge on this...

Just be aware but be hopeful that is a decent product.

But that album cover seems to speak otherwise.

Still, we can hope.

I noticed on the Deep Purple site that this CD box set will come in a fancy box with badges and other things. Bah! Trying to make up for the dodgy quality or something? Just give me the music!

And besides, as someone else said, there are several FM Broadcasts from this tour out there, and any big Deep Purple/Rainbow fan probably has them all by now anyway.

That someone was me!

And, this is a dodgy release, so let someone be a guinea pig on Amazon and tell us how bad it is before any of us plunge.

I was at the Long Island show at the Calderone Concert Hall in Hempstead Village. A great show at what use to be a great little theater. I look forward to this.

Personally, this is one of my favorite Rainbow line-ups. These CD's are not even close to a full show, just the basic songs that were played without solo's and extended songs I would guess. I'm still hopeful we'll see the release of the Castle Donnington show one day.

Universal has the full audio for that show-just not the full video. That will never surface as they did not film the entire thing.

I would love the full audio...the bootleg version I have is good, but I'd rather have a proper sounding version. The only video footage is about 30 minutes long, from what I've seen.

Bump: The 3CD box set was brought forward to an odd Monday release date, and it's out right now.

Well, Cleopatra's scheduling mistake has been corrected -- after showing as "In Stock" and being shipped out earlier in the week, the box is back to showing an August 21st release date, tomorrow.
