"R.E.M. SOUNDS ECLECTIC

R.E.M is one of 15 artists featured on KCRW's newly released CD: "Sounds Eclectic: The Covers Project," available at hearmusic.com. R.E.M. covers John Hartford's Grammy-award winning classic "Gentle On My Mind," made famous by Glenn Campbell in 1967. The CD was spearheaded by KCRW Director of Music and Morning Become Eclectic Host, Nic Harcourt, who recalls R.E.M.'s day in the studio: "It was one of those unique moments," said Harcourt, "watching the guys work the track out on the fly with downloaded lyrics and then bang, performing it live for the first time, beautiful"

Other artists on Sounds Eclectic: The Covers Project include The Magic Numbers, The Flaming Lips, Dido, Paul Weller, Rufus Wainwright, Nikka Costa, and Robert Plant."

There are some other fantastic covers on there.

The Rufus Wainwright cover of Harvest is beautiful & the Flaming Lips cover of Radioheads "Knives Out" is very interesting as well.

I need to check out the REM cover.

as an aside to jay's post, i still can't understand why lucinda william's version of "gentle on my mind" is unavailable on CD. it was played as the credits rolled on that god-awful will ferrel racing movie.

in fact, it was THE best thing about the movie.

Renny, I love you but I think you and I have EXACT opposite tastes :) I loved that Will Ferrel racing movie. I laughed from beginning to end.

What Paul Weller song is on this cd? I think I might pick it up. I've heard the Flaming Lips "Knives Out" cover (I own it as a b-side) and it's very good. I'd love to get a copy of their cover of "War Pigs" but I don't think it's out there as an official release.

If you're considering buying this for the Robert Plant track alone, check your collection first. I bought this and found out I already have this track (Black Dog). It appeared on a CD single with other live tracks recorded down in Austin. Bought this yesterday, listed it on ebay today.

I finally got a copy of this CD from my friend Jamal, who has a connection at HearMusic. I'm hoping he'll get some early copies of the McCartney so I won't have to buy it at Starbucks.

I really enjoyed Damian Rice's radiohead cover on here.
