Description
The Ultimate Gateway to the Grateful Dead featuring 2-CDs of the band's most iconic studio recordings.

The collection's 32 tracks feature music from every Grateful Dead studio album and cover the key waypoints on the band's mystical musical journey. In between, listeners will find the essential tracks that made the band such a cultural phenomenon, including such fan favorites as St. Stephen, Casey Jones, Sugar Magnolia, Friend of the Devil, Scarlet Begonias, and Hell In a Bucket.

• 32 tracks

I'm not sure who chose the songs for this latest compilation, but this is not necessarily what I consider the "best of" The Dead.

Yeah, no matter what the tracklisting, this is just a lame idea in general for the 50th. I am quite confident that they will be offering some special stuff this year (I am amazed - not really - their mail order requests surpasses the capacity of their scheduled shows for the 4th of July weekend). It will be interesting if they even have a public release via ticketmaster on the now pushed back date from 2-14 to 2-28.

They're saving that one for the Target exclusive bonus tracks.

Wow ... it's currently rated at 4.8 out of 5 stars at Amazon, and buyers are raving about how great the remastering is. Check out this review, for example:

http://www.amazon.com/review/R15UPJBKGT ... g=imwan-20

Maybe this compilation isn't so redundant after all.

I bought this. I'm not a huge Dead fan, but like some of their songs. The disc sounds great.

I like it. Sounds great to me too. I just wish they would've put their version of "Good Lovin'" on there.

Why? What a waste of cd plastic material. The Dead is a band where a 2 disc b/o makes no sense. Maybe a 20 disc............

If it had Alabama Getaway and Good Lovin I would consider it. Somehow it has Touch Of Grey.

I was wondering about the 2015 remastering. Are we expecting a new rollout of the catalog? The only reference I have seen is just tracklisting. Not interested in this title (currently revisiting the Dave's picks series waiting on 14)...but curious if any more info.

Why? Because some like me are casual fans. Others are big fans and have everything. I'm certainly not going to buy a catalogue as big as the GD for a few songs I like.

I think that's why 'best of's' are created for the most part. The part I hate is when a best of is put out with 2 "new" songs. It's bullshit when they do that as they always leave off songs that would've been better.

I think Dwight Yoakum (??, some country dude anyway ) did that on a very nice Dead Tribute cd in the 90's.

Agree w/ your last sentence. There are also already a few Dead b/o's.

Wrong. Someone not familiar with the Dead but curious about their music needs something basic, entry-level. A larger collection may indeed make more sense, especially if you're already into the band and you've formed an opinion of what songs really are the best, but unless the actual retail price for such a collection is super-mega-bargain-basement, it would be overwhelming to the point that a potential newbie might decide it's too much to deal with at once, and not bother at all.

Just played Disc One and it is fantastic. It's amazing how much music is on this set.

If you put together the Golden Road and Beyond Description box sets, you get everything they recorded and released up to 1989, with copious bonus tracks. Anyone wanting to delve deeper can then start on the (seemingly) hundreds of live releases from the vaults.

I just want the originally associated live albums to join the 2 box sets Jimbo refers to in hi res (HD Tracks has already done a 96/24 Warner/UA/ Arista studio box), as the Dead were so much better live than in the studio; & imo, the 6 originally released live albums were the cream of the crop.
