I'm surprised they're going for this after the John Carter debacle... but I guess if Guardians of the Galaxy does well, maybe they figure they can be set to jump on the bandwagon.

Anything can be revived. The comic strip is still being published:Flash Gordon still has much more name recognition than John Carter,so this has a (long) shot at being successful.

How many people will head for the exits when they realize they're not using the Queen soundtrack?

I've never been able to sit through that movie and the music was never a draw for me.
I love Queen, but it wasn't enough to get me to watch that movie.

Good luck finding a Flash that is as good looking as Buster Crabbe.

Quote: The Flash Gordon Reboot Movie Has A Director, And It's A Good One
It's Matthew Vaughn, who helped relaunch the X-Men for Fox with First Class and more recently turned Kingman into a surprise hit. As The Hollywood Reporter says, Vaughn is much in demand, so it makes sense Fox would want him in charge of a potentially big new scifi franchise.
As you might recall, 1970s Flash Gordon star Sam G. Jones recently claimed the new movie would be a sequel to his original film , but I remain somewhat skeptical that Jones is fully up-to-date on the project. However, there are no other confirmed details yet, so we'll keep you posted, especially as regards the new movie's potential casting of former hawk man Brian Blessed or the use of the greatest soundtrack song of all time. http://io9.com/the-flash-gordon-reboot- ... 1698047557

I have had zero interest in any Flash Gordon film until I read "Matthew Vaughn". That's huge.

Quote: 'Overlord' Filmmaker Julius Avery to Direct 'Flash Gordon'
Flash Gordon is flying again.
Julius Avery, the filmmaker behind Paramount and Bad Robot's upcoming World War II zombie project Overlord, is in talks to write and direct a Flash Gordon movie for Fox, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Artist Alex Raymond introduced Flash Gordon in 1934 as a hero who ends up on the planet Mongo fighting the tyrant ruler Ming the Merciless. The comic book strip also featured characters such as Dale Arden and mad scientist Hans Zasrkov, and went on to spawn serials starring Buster Crabbe and a 1980 movie featuring a Queen soundtrack. It also influenced George Lucas, who paid Flash Gordon homage with Star Wars.
Kingsman filmmaker Matthew Vaughn was attached to direct the project back in 2015, but last year noted Flash Gordon faced stiff competition in light of fellow space franchises such as Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy. "You've got Star Wars, you've got Guardians, so you've got to have your own space opera, but you have to find something that can survive among these two very, very great franchises," he said.
Vaughn is remaining on board as a producer, along with John Davis and Hearst, which has the rights to the property.
Avery's Overlord is set to open Nov. 9 after premiering last month at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, where it earned strong reviews. The filmmaker is repped by UTA and Brillstein Entertainment Partners. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat- ... ry-1156437

I wonder if they can really revive the Flash Gordon property, or if it'll suffer the same fate as John Carter and the last Tarzan movie.

Well, they'll need to get rid of the "Yellow Peril" aspect of Ming, which is a given. Dale probably won't be the perpetual live bait she always has been, she'll probably be sword-fighting and all that.
In my mind, the most important thing will be updating the visuals -- it needs to look both modern and cool, but also unique and not "Star Wars Lite". I also think they'll have to update some of the story elements -- for example, maybe instead of the standard Roman Gladiator pit of the comics, it's like a deadly version of an American Ninja Warrior course or some such.
I wish them success, I would really love this kind of pulp fiction to make a comeback. But if enjoyable and solid movies like John Carter and Legend of Tarzan can't succeed, I wonder if this can.

It would be great if this would actually get done. Chris Hemsworth would make a great Flash Gordon to boot.
