Description
First-rate melodic pop-metal. Def Leppard tracks like "Let's Go,"..."All Time High" and "Broke 'n' Brokenhearted" exude the band's classic mix of Seventies pomp-glam riffing, Eighties electro-shock rhythms and patented, tremendously stacked chorus vocal harmonies in a manner that's strikingly redolent of their past. But the album also finds the band moving beyond well-trod territory, as evidenced by the slinky pop-funk strut of "Man Enough," the downtuned, acoustic psych-blues of "Battle of My Own" and the sleek New Wave isms of "Invincible." - Rolling Stone

Phil Collen Says New Def Leppard Album Is Their Best Since ‘Hysteria’
by Jeff Giles
April 6, 2015

Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen is clearly very excited about the band’s new album.

During a visit to the One on One With Mitch Lafon podcast, which you can hear below, Collen said that the absence of a label or management company that could interfere with the sessions for the upcoming LP lent the proceedings an anything-goes spirit that produced what he thinks is some of the best music they’ve created in decades — in fact, he went so far as to compare the new cuts to the album that many consider the band’s defining work.

“Normally, we’d go in and we’d always find 10 reasons why to not do an idea as opposed to just going with it. And this was the first time we’ve ever just sat around and every idea got a fair shot, you know. Everyone was, like, ‘Oh, that’s cool. Let’s try that,’” explained Collen. “There was no negative approach to it. So that’s something we’ve never done before and it was so amazing. It blew me away that we got so many things done. And, honestly, I really think this is the best album we’ve done since Hysteria.”

That’s high praise, and it undoubtedly leaves many fans even more eager to hear proof; unfortunately, Collen says that while the new record is basically finished, there could still be a significant wait before it finally arrives in stores.

“We’ve gotta have it mixed and mastered and all that stuff first. But I think all the recording parts are done. Yeah, you know, we wanted to get it ready for the start of the tour, but that’s not gonna happen,” he admitted. “So it’ll be out some time while we’re on tour. I don’t exactly know when, you know, so we’ll just have to play that by ear.”

To their credit Def Leppard continue to make original music and release new album's (CD's) every 3-5 years or so. These days that's a huge accomplishment for a Classic Rock band to succeed at. As a tribute to their continued hard work work and song writing efforts Def Leppard have thus far avoided of becoming a greatest hits has been rock band that still manages to tour every now and then. That's the very good news for any Rock band these days as most have succumbed to becoming nothing more then a parody of themselves. The bad news however is not since their fresh and different release of Slang in 1996 have Def Leppard done anything been considered even remotely memorable. The new albums are defenitly loud volume wise but none of their music resonates like it used to. One song blends into the next and so on until "viola", the CD is over and your asking yourself, 'is that it"? Unfortunately for DL not one song stands out or apart from the rest on any of their releases from Euphoria, X, or Songs from the sparkle lounge. Even their awesome trade mark memorable ballads have all but disappeared altogether which is a real shame because no one did rock ballads better then Def Leppard. In fact the last honest to goodness ballad I heard form Def Leppard was "Where does Love go when it dies?" Good question really, where have all the ballads gone, LOL? In fact only their covers release entitled "Yeah" brings anything resembling energy to the forefront. But seeings how its Def Leppard covering other rock artists hits this release doesn't really count. I'm glad singer Phil Collen is happy with songs they've selected so far.Maybe that's what's been missing for close to 20 years now, band member excitement. Come on guys, "bring it on", don't cheap out here. Prove to everyone out there that your still relevant as far as rock music is concerned!

It's a cross between Hysteria and Sonic Boom.

Phil Collen isn't the singer.

It was pretty obvious that Steve Clark was the main songwriter because the writing went way down after he died. Slang did have some interesting stuff on it and I guess all the later studio albums probably have 2 or 3 good songs on each of them (except for X which was dreadful), but it's been a really long time since they put together an album that was really good for the entire 40-50 minutes.

High N Dry, Pyromania, Hysteria = masterpiece albums.

Def Leppard’s New Album Features Lead Vocals From All Members

The guys in Def Leppard know they probably aren’t going to sell a million copies of their new album, but as guitarist Vivian Campbell sees it, that only freed them up to make the record they truly wanted to make.

“Frankly, candidly, we could go year after year playing our hits,” Campbell pointed out in an interview with The Province. “A record for us is kind of a loss leader. A new record is something we do for us.”

This time around, they started by setting up and playing live in the studio — which, as Campbell conceded, isn’t exactly out of the ordinary for most bands, “but we haven’t done it since 1996.” That was just the start of a tinkering process that drew out a few new wrinkles in the Def Leppard sound.

“There’s a lot of talk before we make an album,” mused Campbell. “With this album there wasn’t as much talking but there is an awful lot of experimentalism that goes on with a Leppard record. Once we find our direction, we’re very quick. Everybody brings something to the table.”

That’s truer than ever with this LP, which features lead vocals from every member of the band. “We’ve never done that before,” pointed out Campbell, who quickly insisted the results were worth the risk. “It’s diverse, but it all sounds like Def Leppard. It’s the best album we’ve made in 23 years.”

That experimental streak ends, however, when the group returns to the road for its next round of tour dates. “We’re beholden to the hits, and we’ve got a lot of them,” he pointed out. “We’re always going to play ‘Pour Some Sugar on Me’ … we’re always going to play ‘Photograph.’” But in Campbell’s eyes, that still covers plenty of ground: “We’ve been able to progress and still we’ve been true to our hard rock roots. We’re one part AC/DC and one part Queen.”

Should be called "Pour Some Salt on Me".

This is actually a decent song with lots of hooks but pretty cliched.

I haven't bought an album since Pyromania and I won't now either, but at least this song showed some life.

Like Pete said, it's a remake of "Pour Some Sugar On Me."

Probably better than what they've come out with in the last 15 years or so, but so much of a retread that I'm not impressed enough to want to buy it.

I like this new song, at least its in your face waving a pointed finger right in your front of your eyes. We'll see about the other 13 songs obviously but this is a very positive step in the right direction as far as I'm concerned. Count me "cautiousosly optimistic" on this one.....so far!

PS - Americans love a comeback!

No Rick, I really disliked it.

I got as a birthday gift that year and sold it off not too long after.

The production was so overblown and the songs so cheesy I cringed.

The rest of America disagreed with me!

Wow. I love that disc even more than Pyromania. Everything after that is meh.

Jeezus. That song is terrible. C'mon guys, I know you're getting older, but can you pick up the pace a little bit?

What a plodding, cheezy, steaming pile of excrement. And then it suddenly goes Queen for the guitar solo? Bizarre.
