John Lennon's first wife Cynthia Lennon dead

Cynthia Lennon, who was married to the late Beatles legend John Lennon during his rise to fame, has died, FOX411 has learned. She was 75.

A rep for Cynthia and John Lennon's only son, Julian Lennon, confirmed the news.

"Cynthia Lennon passed away today at her home in Mallorca, Spain, following a short but brave battle with cancer," a statement from Julian Lennon's rep read. "Her son Julian Lennon was at her bedside throughout. The family are thankful for your prayers. Please respect their privacy at this difficult time."

Cynthia Lennon, then Cynthia Powell, met John Lennon in the early '60s in college. In 1962, the two married when she became pregnant with Julian Lennon. They eventually divorced in 1968.

John Lennon memorably went on to marry Yoko Ono, and Ono remained his wife until he was murdered by a crazed fan in 1980.

Julian Lennon told FOX411 last year, ahead of the Beatles' 50th anniversary, that he grew up living with his mom as his father traveled the world as a member of the Fab Four.

“Anyone must remember that dad left when I was 3 years old," Julian Lennon said. "Mom and I lived out of the limelight. We lived a totally different life."

On his website, Julian Lennon shared a song and music video, featuring photos of his mother. In it he sings, "You gave your life for love/ I know you’re safe above."

What a beautiful tribute by Julian, man I got tears in my eyes, no BS.

I got to meet Julian a few times when he swung through on tour in the early 80's (some of my good friends were in his band) and he was a great kid then and a very good son in this tribute to his Mom now. Having lost mine about 16 months back you are changed person, and a most Thankful one to have them in your life.

Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and Yoko Ono Pay Tribute to Cynthia Lennon

As the news of Cynthia Lennon’s passing traveled yesterday, the surviving former members of the Beatles and their kin offered homage to John Lennon‘s first wife.

“The news of Cynthia’s passing is very sad,” wrote Paul McCartney in a statement published by NME. “She was a lovely lady who I’ve known since our early days together in Liverpool. She was a good mother to Julian and will be missed by us all, but I will always have great memories of our times together.”

“I’m very saddened by Cynthia’s death,” added Lennon’s second wife, Yoko Ono. “She was a great person and a wonderful mother to Julian. She had such a strong zest for life and I felt proud how we two women stood firm in the Beatles family. Please join me in sending love and support to Julian at this very sad time.”

Ringo Starr shared his grief and condolences via Twitter, writing, “Peace and love to Julian Lennon. God bless Cynthia, love Ringo and Barbara.”

George Harrison‘s widow Olivia and their son Dhani also paid their respects on Harrison’s Facebook page, posting a photo that he’d taken of Cynthia and writing, “Sending our love and deepest sympathies to dear Julian Lennon. May God bless Cynthia always.”

Cynthia Lennon was 75 at the time of her death, which occurred at her home in Spain after what was referred to as “a short but brave battle with cancer.”
