Liza Minnelli has checked into a rehabilitation facility to receive treatment for substance abuse.
The Cabaret star, 69, has battled alcohol and drug addiction throughout her career and in a 2006 TV interview described her addiction as a "disease". Her mother, Judy Garland, died in 1969 at the age of 47 from a barbiturates overdose.
The singer-actress's representative said in a statement to the press yesterday (March 18): "Liza Minnelli has valiantly battled substance abuse over the years and whenever she has needed to seek treatment she has done so. Meaning she hasn't given in. When you have this disease it is always tugging at you. I have a family member with this and we have had deep conversations about its effects. That desire of need never goes away, all one can do is suppress it and stay focused. Easier said than done of course.
