A live version of "Crying In The Rain" with John Sykes and Cozy Powell. I couldn't believe this existed at first -- then I remembered that "Crying In The Rain" had originally been recorded a few years before the version on the Whitesnake (1987) album:

Yeah, one bad-ass song. I have this show from a Laserdisc copy. It was in Japan in 1984. Decent version with the Coverdale/Sykes/Powell/Murray/Bailey lineup.
But man, the 1987 version just kills-what a guitar solo-insane!
The version on the 2006 DVD "Live In The Still Of The Night" features some truly sick guitar playing by Doug Aldrich and drumming from Tommy Aldridge-good lord!

Agree on the 1987 version, IP. What was Coverdale thinking when he fired Sykes?

Drummer Tommy Aldrige has returned to Whitesnake for a third stint, David Coverdale has confirmed.

He replaces Brian Tichy, who announced his decision to bow out earlier this month in order to concentrate on new project SUN with Sass Jordan.

Aldridge says: “I can’t express how honoured and grateful I am to be back in the ‘Snake fold. Working with David and co has always been a labour of love. I’m so stoked to be back to finish what we started.”

Mainman Coverdale adds: “When I asked the band members to put together their wishlist of potential drummers, every one, without exception, had Tommy at the top of their list.

“Most of the fans who communicated their suggestions on the website wanted Tommy back too.

“It seems like our destiny to work together. This is going to be so much fun.”

Aldridge was previously a member of Whitesnake from 1987 until the band went on hiatus in 1991. Afterwards he played with Manic Eden, Motorhead and Ted Nugent, among others, before rejoining Coverdale’s outfit in 2002.

He remained behind the kit for five years before departing to join Thin Lizzy, then led by John Sykes. In 2009 the band were forced to cancel a series of support slots with AC/DC when Aldridge broke his collarbone. That kickstarted a series of events which saw Sykes leave Lizzy and original drummer Brian Downey return, leading to the creation of new band Black Star Riders at the end of 2012.

Somewhere, Rudy Sarzo is experiencing a conundrum over which eighties band he decided to join this year.

Going by Tate's audiences lately, I know which one would be a better bet for a paycheck that won't bounce...

He has his options doesn't he!

Although I always say how misunderstood Whitesnake are. I really consider them a 70s band as their first 3 releases were then and their sound until 1984 was still rooted in 70s Blues Rock/Hard Rock/R&B.

And then the hairspray happened....

I saw them live at Westbury a year ago and they were great.

Yes-since reforming in 2002 Whitesnake have been damn good and balls-out. I still prefer the 1978-83 period the best. But the last album was fantastic. Might have to break that out now!

Or, as Coverdale referred to it..."Mousse abuse."

Surprised this hasn't been mentioned here yet. Wonder if Coverdale will finally call it?

As much as I love Sykes' playing, I don't know that there's an arena in the world big enough to contain both their egos.

I'd go see Sykes & Coverdale. But yeah, the egos would probably preclude a reunion of that classic era.

Hoekstra's work with Night Ranger and Trans Siberian Orchestra is something else.

Another stunning player for Whitesnake.

Coverdale's voice will remain shot however.

I just read that tickets for Whitesnake's Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom (it's not a casino, BTW). $101.00 apiece, standing room only.

Not that I was planning to go, but I certainly wouldn't pay that much.

Even if I could sit down.

David Coverdale has explained how plans for a reunion with Deep Purple colleague Ritchie Blackmore led to the creation of Whitesnake’s upcoming Purple Album.

The tribute work is released on May 18, and it’s the first Whitesnake album to feature guitarist Joel Hoekstra in place of Doug Aldrich.

Coverdale exclusively told Classic Rock how late Purple keyboardist Jon Lord had wanted the Mark III version of the band to reunite, and discussions took place after his death.

Now he says in the video below: “A lot of the ideas weren’t appealing to me, unfortunately. But I was already doing preparatory work on these songs, hoping Ritchie would be open to bringing them up to date and reappraising some of them.”

When he told his wife it was a shame that his work had been wasted, she asked, “Why don’t you do it under the Whitesnake banner?”

Coverdale continues: “I took a little time to think about it, I spoke to my musicians and everybody was incredibly positive, so it was all systems go.”

Guitarist Reb Beach says of The Purple Album: “It was the most exciting thing David’s ever said to me – and David’s said some pretty exciting things.”

Deep Purple are the cover stars of the latest edition of Classic Rock, on sale now and also featuring Motorhead, Roxy Music, Free, Kate Bush, Chicago, Kyuss, The Cure, New York Dolls and much more.
