With the creation of Dope Machines, Airborne Toxic Event leader Mikel Jollett says it's different this time around than it's been for their other records. He spent a year locked in a room, working 12 hours a day where he wrote over 40 songs. "I wanted to change the approach of the band and change the sound of the band," Jollett said, "I knew in order to do that, I had to learn a lot of new tricks and new skills." Jollett not only wrote all of the songs on Dope Machines, he also produced the record. This was his first time producing an entire album and decided to do it after Jacquire King, the producer of Such Hot Blood, encouraged him to do so. Jollett admits that it was a lot of work but was also a tremendous amount of discovery and creative energy, and that was invigorating and exciting for him as an artist. Fans may wonder why The Airborne Toxic Event would change the way they do things, but according to Jollett, they change with every record as they continue to evolve as a band.
