Quote: Legendary actor Edward Herrmann, whose face and voice are familiar from so many roles in TV and film, died Wednesday in New York, according to TMZ and Buzzfeed.
He was 71.
TMZ reports that Herrmann's family says he had been battling brain cancer and had been hospitalized for the last three weeks in New York.
"Edward Herrmann, besides being an accomplished actor, he was also a true gentleman and a scholar, as well as being an incredibly kind and decent man. He will be sorely missed," Herrmann's manager, Robbie Kass, tells USA TODAY in an e-mail confirming his death

Hermann has played many roles in his long career, but the one that comes to mind is on a 1980 episode of M*A*S*H where he plays a visiting surgeon who has a breakdown...

I just remembered another role. He had a supporting role in Lost Boys where he turned out to be the master vampire in the 80's. I think that was Kiefer Sutherland's first big film, and I had no idea at the time he would eventually be as big of a star (at least on television) as his father was on the big screen. Speaking of Lost Boys... Veteran IMWANkers may remember the reaction I had when some people referred to a plot twist in From Dusk To Dawn as a spoiler, because I remember the advertising campaign at the time as well as the reviews, and that plot development was actively promoted at the time of the release. Hermann's role in Lost Boys *was* a spoiler because his vampire status wasn't revealed until late in the film, and he didn't seem like an obvious villain.

He was consistently great in Gilmore Girls as well.
