It's always fun to read everyone's lists at this time of year, and I've already seen a number of my favorites indicated in this thread. 2014 was another excellent year of new (and new-to-me) albums as well as archive releases. I'll be putting together lists for my obligatory "Year In Review" post at my blog, which I hope to complete next week. I'll copy & paste here whenever it's complete.

I wasn't sure if anyone was going to start this thread or not and emailed Linda before stepping on anyone's toes.

When I was on the Metacritic forums, the year-end favorite release thread was such a major deal. I don't see that kind of list making frenzy anymore since those forums ended. Guess that's why I've kept up making my lists.

Lawrence, I was bitching about myself not having gotten to it, not about you! :)

This was harder this year, as Wikipedia's list is their most incomplete ever. I used Wiki, Ice NR, FTV, DS & CC, & my weak memory. I'm sure I've inadvertently left some things out. I've also stayed away from remasters & hi-res unless they came with a significant amount of previously unreleased music that I really liked because there were so many quality remasters this year.

Not doing any order this year either (it kind of feels like a weak year in music other than the wonderful myriad of hi-res reissues); just a "top tier" & "2nd tier".

My fav 10:
Dan Reed Network - Network Anthology (with a rarities disc)
Frank Zappa - Roxy By Proxy
Jack Bruce - Rockpalast: The 50th Birthday Concerts/The Lost Disc
King Crimson - Starless Box
Prince & 3RDEYEGIRL - Montreux Jazz Fest 2013 Volume 3
Prince & 3RDEYEGIRL - Plectrumelectrum
Steve Rothery - Live in Plovdiv
Steve Rothery - The Ghosts of Pripyat
Suzanne Vega - Tales From The Realm Of The Queen Of Pentacles
Wishbone Ash - Roadworks Volume 4 (just released on 12/25/14 & probably my #1 album of the year)

15 others I liked:

Ani DiFranco - Allergic To Water
Ani DiFranco - Harrisburg January 23, 2008
CSNY - CSNY Live 1974
David Crosby - Croz
Grateful Dead - Houston, Texas 11/18/1972
Jackson Browne - Standing In The Breach
King Crimson - Elements
Lucinda Williams ~ Down Where the Spirit Meets the Bone
Martin Turner (3 original members of Wishbone Ash) - Garden Party Live
Steve Hunter - Tone Poems Live
Tom Petty - Hypnotic Eye
Tori Amos - Unrepentant Geraldines
Transatlantic - Kaleidoscope
Transatlantic - Kaliveoscope
Wishbone Ash - Blue Horizon

Positive trend of the year: Growth of Hi-res (both download & disc) & growth of cd quality downloads

Biggest disappointment (in a class by itself) - The Neil Young album that was recorded in a phone booth

2nd biggest disappointment - The insane trend for brickwalled hi-res releases.
3rd biggest disappointment - The Sarah McLachlan (her last truly GREAT album was Fumbling, & her last memorable album was Surfacing & that was a long time ago.....)

Renny, I recently finished BC's autobiography. I was left with the strong impression (though this wasn't stated) that what matters to BC at this point is his new family & what seemed like a very strong desire from either him or his new wife for his wife & new daughter to have EXTREME anonymity.

I got that opinion more from what he doesn't say (very little after 2002, very little about his last couple albums, lots about past lovers & wives, almost nothing about his current/new wife except the initials of her name (MJ; he didn't even state her full first name!), & that her face is somewhat obscured in the only picture of her in the version I have.

BC MAY be calling it a career. He's not a young man, either.

Was the Anathema this year? If so, I need to add it to my list.

Yep, Distant Satellites was their latest studio album. I think it got mixed reviews at the time of release which kept my expectations low, but I think it's fantastic.

Based on my purchases from 2014...

Red Dragon Cartel - Red Dragon Cartel
Kacey Musgraves - Same Trailer, Different Park
Frank Zappa - Roxy By Proxy
Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road 40th Anniversary editition
Wilko Johnson/Roger Daltrey - Going Back Home
Billly Joel - A Matter Of Trust: The Bridge To Russia
St. Paul & The Broken Bones - Half The City
Jill Sobule - Dottie's Charms
Ace Frehley - Space Invader
Queen - Live At The Rainbow
Slash featuring Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators - World On Fire
Vintage Trouble - The Swing House Acoustic Sessions
Abba - Live At Wembley Arena

There are several that I'm pretty sure would make my list but I haven't listened to them yet.

The Vintage Trouble is an EP, with two of the songs being acoustic versions of songs from their first album, but that band pretty much can do no wrong with me. The Queen and Abba releases were great. But the release of the year for me was the Wilko Johnson/Roger Daltrey album.

The bargain of the year, though, was enabled by this here board - I got in on the Judas Priest Complete Albums set when Amazon listed it at $11.99.
