Amazon Unveils One-Hour Delivery Service

Amazon.com Inc. on Thursday introduced Prime Now, a service in Manhattan promising delivery in as soon as one hour.

The service, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, is available in parts of New York, though Amazon said it would expand to other cities next year. Amazon will charge $7.99 for delivery within an hour, though two-hour delivery is free, according to a statement.

Amazon said more than 25,000 items are eligible for delivery under the Prime Now program, which is only available to customers who pay $99 for the annual Prime membership.

Amazon had been testing the service with bike messengers for at least a few weeks from a building it leased on 34th Street, opposite the Empire State Building. Seattle-based Amazon has leased the entire building, site of a former department store, for 17 years to house office space as well as merchandise.

Same-day and, now, one-hour delivery have been something of a Holy Grail for e-commerce companies hoping to compete with the immediacy of brick-and-mortar shopping. But the difficult economics of instant delivery have caused rival eBay Inc. to scale back the ambition of its similarly-named eBay Now one-hour service and felled startups from the early days of the Internet, like Kozmo.com and Urbanfetch.

In addition, Google Inc. offers same-day delivery service, but only for a limited number of products in a handful of U.S. cities.

Meanwhile, traditional physical retailers like Macy’s Inc. and Gap Inc. are turning to startups to make same-day or one-hour deliveries for them to stave off the threat from Amazon.

If you're curious about Amazon Prime, you can sign up for a 30-day trial membership here:

I got Prime when Amazon raised its free shipping threshold to $35, and I think I made back the entire year's cost in those first two months of being able to pounce on all the holiday deals without needing to worry about reaching a minimum order amount each time. Then the rest of the year was gravy.

Hmm ... don't think I'd pay extra for one-hour delivery, but two-hour delivery for free would be awesome when Prime Now makes it down to where I live.

Do you have to tip the delivery guy? (And will Amazon be paying them $2.13 an hour plus mileage?)

What Linda said - I signed up for the Prime trial before last year's holiday rush and saved a ton. And I have to say, while I was a bit skeptical about whether I'd get my money's worth, it's been great having the two-day delivery. If I ever pony up for a streaming device that will pump Amazon Prime to my TV, I can drop Netflix and let that pay for my Prime.

ETA: And I don't think I'd pony up for the one-hour delivery. Heck - I don't even usually download the Auto-Rip versions of my CDs in an hour (when I download them at all).

The news report on TV last night showed a copy of a receipt. The tip was on there. Whether or not that amound ($5.00) was typed in at some point by the customer or by Amazon wasn't stated. The delivery cost of this item was $8.00 + $5.00 tip. There's nothing that I want so badly that I'm going pay that kind of shipping. If there is, I'll go to a store to buy it. I'll stick with my Amazon free shipping.

Well, if you have an extra hour to wait...

(I have an extra hour to wait.)

Forced tips really piss me off. It's supposed to be an appreciation for excellent service, NOT a required charge. It's a way for companies to not pay there employees.
