The Who's Pete Townshend to perform and release 'classical' version of 'Quadrophenia'
Pete Townshend has announced details of a "classical" version of The Who's classic 'Quadrophenia' album.
The original LP was released in 1973, with an orchestral re-recording of the album coming out to mark the influential band's 50th anniversary.
The recording features the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London's Oriana Choir, tenor Alfie Boe, conductor Robert Ziegler, singer-songwriter Rachel Fuller, plus Townshend on electric guitar. It was recorded at London’s Air Studios last October.
Townshend and co will perform the reworked album at the Royal Albert Hall in London on July 5, 2015, with tickets going on sale on Friday (December 5).
"A lot of major symphony orchestras are in trouble because their audience is getting old and the younger audiences prefer softer stuff, such as film soundtrack music," Townshend explains. "I think that Quadrophenia would reinvigorate their audiences and bring in people who might not otherwise go to see a symphony orchestra perform without lights and fireworks and a movie screen."

A little more information about this project can be gleaned from the Royal Albert Hall's description of the upcoming live concert:
Quote:
As part of The Who's 50th Anniversary celebrations, Deutsche Grammophon present a world premiere concert of the new 'symphonised' version of Quadrophenia.
Pete Townshend has created a new orchestral version of one of The Who's landmark albums, Quadrophenia. The new incarnation of this classic rock opera is the latest chapter in Townshend's lifelong mission to break the three-minute mould of the traditional pop song and take rock music to a higher artistic level.
In the 1960s he defined the concept of the "rock opera" with Tommy, taking it a stage further with Quadrophenia. Conceived and written by Townshend in 1973, Quadrophenia went on to become an iconic feature film.
The new "symphonised" version of Quadrophenia, an album originally released by The Who in 1973, was orchestrated by Rachel Fuller, a professional composer, orchestrator and singer-songwriter. It will be released by the Deutsche Grammophon with a world premiere concert at the Royal Albert Hall, performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and London Oriana Choir, conducted by Robert Ziegler, and starring Pete Townshend and Alfie Boe, who sings the parts originally sung by Roger Daltrey.

Ah, so that was his lifelong mission ! It all makes sense now.

Is that the version that will have the demos of the post? That's what I want to hear - the development process!
patience........
all in good time.......be assured, that at some point, townshend will figure out that it might be another way to rip off his fans with 50 year old music once again.

As President Ronald Regan had remarked "There you go again". Why do you keep saying "ripping off his fans" when it is "our choice"?
Man, you really have a hard-on for Townshend. I never seen such an obsession. Let it go bro, enjoy the music.

He's selling, NOT to you. To anyone who wants to buy it. It's voluntary. No one forces you to buy anything. No one is mislabeling the product as anything than what it is. Therefore, it is NOT rip-off.

If you're not nice
Guys,
I've wound this thread back several posts to the point where Renny said "okay" above, which seemed like a natural endpoint for the argument. What followed was too unWAN for my tastes, and not in the spirit of ICE.
BTW, I told Renny privately that I hoped he wouldn't be "speechless" in this thread for the entire six months until the release date. So if you want to get mad at somebody, take it out on me instead.
Probably not everybody agrees, but to me it's not a true Pete Townshend thread (or a Paul McCartney or Brian Wilson thread) without Renny anointing it with his opinions. I'm a fan of all three musicians (a really, really BIG fan of the latter two) ... and I talk with Renny a lot ... I know he never means anything personal towards others' musical tastes.
