Not One Artist's Album Has Gone Platinum In 2014

We are now nine and a half months into 2014, and the sales numbers for the music industry are looking particularly grim. While the fourth quarter is typically when the most sales occur, things have never been quite so bad.

In 2014, not a single artist’s album has gone platinum. Not one has managed to cross that million sales mark.

One album has managed to sell over a million copies so far this year, but it’s a soundtrack. The ever-popular Frozen soundtrack may slowly be working its way down the charts, but it is by far the best selling collection this year. Though it doesn’t have any marquee names on it—those that are usually expected to sell the best—the soundtrack has managed to move 3.2 million copies so far, and with winter coming, that number is sure to rise.

By this time last year, five different CDs had hit one million units sold or more, with Justin Timberlake’s comeback LP The 20/20 Experience in front. By the beginning of Q4 in 2013, that album had moved 2.3 million copies, which is still far behind the success of Frozen.

In fact, album sales this year are so bad, you have to look all the way down to number four on the list of best-sellers to even find something that was released in 2014. The number two and three sellers are Beyonce’s surprise self-titled album and newcomer Lorde’s Pure Heroine, respectively. Both of those have moved in the area of 750,000 so far this year. Both albums were released in 2013 and moved the bulk of their numbers then, but have continued to enjoy commercial success.

Number four on the list is country star Eric Church and his album Outsiders, which is only 20-something thousand behind Lorde. Immediately behind him is Coldplay, whose Ghost Stories isn’t trailing by much.

Comparatively, 60 songs have sold one million (or more) copies, something not unusual in a world where loving a single no longer means having to purchase an entire album. While 60 is surely better than…one…when it comes to million-plus sellers, it’s not all good news. Last year, 83 songs went platinum, so digital single sales are sliding as well, but not as quickly.

We are now in Q4, and the time for record sales to spike is upon us. As more and more shoppers look for the perfect gift for loved ones, the record industry is hoping that they turn to albums, as so many have in the past. Sadly, the rest of 2014 doesn’t have many huge chart toppers left. We are not expecting albums from Adele, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars or the handful of others who still have the power to move millions of albums. While anything is possible—especially in a post-Beyonce, drop-an-album-at-anytime kind of world—it is unlikely that anyone is coming to save 2014’s lackluster record sales.

My album buying has slowed down pretty considerably.

Its kinda weird, people aren't listening to music any less.

What about platinum for music fans who've bought a million albums in a year? Jimbo?

it's a new generation of music buyers for sure.

30 years the new lucinda williams would have sold a gazillion copies, today, it might get to 100,000.

sad sad sad

i still weep for the kids of today.

This is an old story, but among other things, no one is trying to develop artists anymore. It's all about putting out singles, promoting the hell out of them and then moving on to the next flavor. I really miss good artist development.

They've turned A&R into reality TV, now. :ohno:

Even though the artists who still move a lot of physical product tend to be relative outliers on the pop spectrum these days, usually skewing to an older audience (Susan Boyle, Michael Buble, Kenny Chesney) you'd think there'd have been at least one so far this year.

It does simplify collecting, however: It wasn't that long ago that a successful pop album could easily spin off a dozen or so import variations, CD singles and promos. Now it's basically a matter of going to Target and grabbing the deluxe edition.

Still...I'll always remember 2014 as the year where, for a couple of weeks anyway, it was possible to go to any Walmart in the US and, for about $12, pick up a copy of "Yesterday...and Today" by the Beatles in a perfect little butcher cover mini-sleeve (and a replacement cover sticker) containing both stereo and mono mixes of the album. I still find that pretty darned remarkable.

Did - does - the stand alone Yesterday...and Today... come with the butcher's cover? I always saw the replacement cover, and was under impression the butcher was only with the box.
I may have to look into this...

and the reference to Lucinda Williams - her new album is one of my favorites...what an artist.

The cardboard sleeve had the butcher cover; the steamer trunk cover is actually an unstuck sticker, inserted in the plastic outer sleeve and covering the butcher cover.

I didn't get the boxed set, but I seem to recall that each of the individual titles/sleeves came with an obi strip (in English) that the boxed set sleeves lacked.

2014 has been a busy year for me in terms of buying CDs. Mostly re-issues, deluxe box sets etc.
There has been little new music that has inspired me for years.

If it wasn't for re-issues I would have essentially stopped buying CDs years ago. Occasionally I find a new group I really like. California Breed is the latest one.

1. The last couple generations have been been raised on buying mp3 singles instead of albums & nabbing free downloads. (Most non mega hit bands now make most of there income selling t-shirts at concerts)

2. Labels choosing Ariana Grande types that have little staying power (kind of like me at almost 57!), don't write quality songs if they write at all, & often have little talent. I've said since I was old enough to know the difference that one of the main reasons the Beatles were so huge is because they were the 1st Rock act that gave the customer an album with at least 10 out of 12 songs being quality; whereas almost every other rock band was putting 1 or 2 singles & a bunch of garbage on a album. The Beatles revolutionized the pop industry in this manner (Jazz artists already knew this at the dawn of the LP age, but "pop" artists did not).

3. It's somewhat difficult to have a deep emotional experience with an mp3......................

Even the artists that have had some success on Kickstart, etc already had a following: Bush, Juliana Hatfield, Paula Cole, Suzanne Vega, etc.

If the RIAA wants to stay in business (without a presidential executive order that every American MUST buy the new 'Nsynch album (seig heil RIAA), they need a totally new model. Sign & develop QUALITY ARTISTS (in all genres). Stop ALL brickwalling 100% of the time. Make hi res (disc or download) the new format priority. Make music sound like music again. Stop suing there best customers. Lower prices to a reasonable level. And a bunch of other stuff that I'll never think of 'cause I'm too old to have a clue how to market to 18 year olds. At least I admit it!

It may be too late for the generation after ours already, though.

i have been doing the 'sunday flyers' thread for about 10 or more years now, and i can't tell you how many 'flavor of the week' rappers and teen stars i have seen come and go.

funny thing is, the ones that get the biggest picture in the ads and the most hype are the ones you never ever hear of again.

guaranteed there will be one this week, as i am going to do the thread in a couple of minutes, and they will just keep on coming.

funny thing about rappers: ever the really big ones don't hang around for long: remember snoop dogg....dr. dre....ice-t......ll cool j.......master p.....etc

and most of them end up acting or doing something else in the business.

I bought Sam's CD and find it to be nowhere near the quality of an Adele album...

Guess I'm the minority. New releases and newer albums (1-10 years old) make up around 80-85% or more of the CDs & LPs I buy. There's just too much great new stuff out there and not enough time & money for it all.

You know I hate rap also; but didn't NWA last for quite awhile?
