Wolverine was pretty cool. In the 1970s.

He lived unknown, and few could know
When Logan ceased to trim;
But he is in his grave, and, O!
The difference to him.

A slumber did my spirit seal
I had no human fears
He seemed a thing that could not feel
The touch of Earthly years

No motion has he now, no force
He neither hears nor sees
Rolled round in Earth's diurnal course
With rocks and stones and trees

Comic book death. Permanent. Yep.

I know this has been in the works for a while now, but is this more Marvel downplaying
of properties that it doesn't control in the movies?

He's not quite gone. Marvel is immediately milking his death with a new title called The Wolverines (horrible title).

Quote:
Wolverine's corpse, which was coated in molten adamantium at the end of Death of Wolverine #4, will appear in the first issue of The Wolverines, the ongoing weekly series starring Wolverine's pals and frenemies that will launch out of the Wolverine remembrance comic Logan Legacy. At least, he'll appear on the cover.

There once was a mutant named Logan,
whose inclusion in X-Men was token.
He was the only Canuck, running often amuck,
his popularity with fans went unbroken.

Then Marvel was in need of financing.
Fox Studios invited them dancing.
At the end of the night, without much of a fight,
the House of Ideas got a pantsing.

And now Wolverine is a star.
The lines for his movies go far.
They still sell his books, but can't hide sad looks
for their checks from the flicks are sub-par.

Then Disney came up with a plan,
based on a mutant not being a man.
It isn't that mean to kill Wolverine,
if he wasn't created by Stan.

When his wounds up in heaven get healed,
and he rises alive from the field,
he won't be the same, he'll get a new name,
James Howlett, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Well, it's not Wordsworth...but it no doubt sums up the situation pretty well.
